Musk Bets Tesla’s AI5 Chip Can Outrun NVIDIA on Cost and Efficiency

Tesla is putting even more weight behind its custom AI chip strategy, with Elon Musk claiming that the company’s upcoming AI5 inference chip could become a major advantage for its self-driving vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots.

According to Musk, Tesla’s AI5 chip may deliver two to three times better performance per watt than Nvidia’s current offerings when used in Tesla’s own products. If achieved, that would be a significant step forward for the company’s artificial intelligence ambitions, especially as efficiency becomes just as important as raw computing power in autonomous driving and robotics.

Performance per watt is a key metric for AI hardware because it measures how much computing power a chip can deliver for the energy it consumes. In electric vehicles and humanoid robots, that balance matters even more.
