Tesla AI5 chip production is moving closer as Samsung’s 2nm process takes center stage
Tesla’s next-generation AI5 chip appears to be taking a major step toward production, with Samsung expected to manufacture the processor using its advanced 2nm process technology. The chip, which recently completed tape-out, is being positioned as a major upgrade for Tesla’s future self-driving systems and broader artificial intelligence ambitions.
Elon Musk previously confirmed that Tesla’s AI5 chip had successfully reached the tape-out stage, an important milestone where the chip design is finalized and sent to the foundry for manufacturing preparation. Images shared of the chip showed a large central compute die surrounded by 12 DRAM modules, suggesting a design focused on high AI performance, strong memory capacity, and efficient bandwidth.
The memory modules shown appear to come from SK hynix, though the exact DRAM model could not be identified from the image. The markings suggest the chip was taped out during the 13th week of 2026, which falls between March 23 and March 29.
Industry reports indicate that Samsung will build a large portion of Tesla’s AI5 chip at its Taylor facility in Texas using its 2nm manufacturing technology. This is a significant development for Samsung Foundry, as the company has been working to prove the strength and reliability of its next-generation chipmaking process.
Tesla is also expected to use TSMC as part of its AI5 production strategy, though the exact process node for chips made at TSMC has not yet been confirmed. By working with both Samsung and TSMC, Tesla may be aiming to secure enough production capacity while reducing reliance on a single supplier.
AI5 is expected to replace Tesla’s current HW4 platform and serve as the foundation for the company’s next-generation Full Self-Driving system. Musk has described AI5 as a massive leap over HW4, claiming it could deliver up to a 40x improvement in overall performance. The chip is also expected to offer around 8x higher raw compute capability and 9x more memory compared with the current hardware.
Reported specifications point to a very powerful AI processor. Tesla AI5 is expected to deliver close to 2,500 TOPS of AI compute performance, paired with up to 144 GB of memory per chip. The design is also said to be optimized for modern transformer-based AI workloads, which are increasingly important for advanced autonomous driving, robotics, and real-time decision-making systems.
Musk has previously said that solving AI5 was an “existential” task for Tesla, underlining how important the chip is to the company’s future. Tesla is not only building vehicles but also trying to create a complete AI platform that can power self-driving cars, humanoid robots, and large-scale AI training systems.
The AI5 chip is expected to come in multiple configurations. One version may use a single system-on-chip design aimed at competing with NVIDIA’s Hopper-class AI hardware. Another version could use a dual-chip configuration designed to rival Blackwell-class performance, while reportedly consuming less power and costing significantly less to produce.
If Tesla can deliver strong performance per watt and performance per dollar, AI5 could become a key advantage for the company. Lower power consumption is especially important for electric vehicles, where every watt matters. At the same time, reduced manufacturing cost could help Tesla scale the technology across more vehicles and products.
High-volume production of Tesla’s AI5 chip is currently expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. That timeline would place the chip at the center of Tesla’s next major hardware upgrade cycle, potentially arriving alongside future vehicle platforms and more advanced autonomous driving features.
Musk has also discussed the possibility of moving future chip production into Tesla’s planned TeraFab concept. While that facility has not yet been formally announced in full detail, the idea is to bring chip development, DRAM, packaging, and production closer together under one roof. If realized, such a facility could give Tesla far more control over its AI hardware roadmap.
Work is already underway on Tesla’s AI6 chip and Dojo3 supercomputer plans. Tesla resumed its supercomputer ambitions earlier in 2026, signaling that the company is once again pushing deeper into custom silicon and AI infrastructure.
With AI5 moving toward production, Samsung’s 2nm process gaining a high-profile customer, and Tesla preparing future AI6 and Dojo3 platforms, the company’s chip strategy is becoming a major part of its long-term vision. Tesla’s next big challenge will be turning these ambitious chip designs into reliable, high-volume hardware capable of powering the next generation of self-driving technology.
