Motorola Prepares to Launch New Moto Tag, A Rival to Apple AirTag

Motorola seems to be stepping into the increasingly popular smart tag market, preparing to launch a device that may contend with the likes of the Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2. A leak has revealed Motorola’s intentions to introduce the Moto Tag, a device that could complement the company’s top-tier Razr-series smartphones.

Previously, Motorola dipped its toes in the smart tag waters with a product meant to integrate with Focus 86-series indoor security cameras, using short-range Bluetooth connectivity. This earlier product, however, seems to be overshadowed by the upcoming Moto Tag, which is anticipated to offer more capabilities and a broader tracking range for personal belongings in conjunction with devices like the Edge 50 Ultra.

The Moto Tag, known by the model number XT2445-1, recently made its way through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), indicating that its launch might be on the horizon. The device is expected to employ ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, similar to the Apple AirTag, and function as a Bluetooth peripheral.

While the FCC filing doesn’t reveal any design specifics of the Moto Tag, consumers are curious to see if it will offer conveniences such as in-built key-chain support, mirroring another potential competitor, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2.

One distinguishing feature is the Moto Tag’s power supply, a CR2032 battery type also used by the AirTag. What may set the Moto Tag apart, however, is the potential for a user-replaceable battery, hinted at by the confirmation of a removable battery door in the design.

As the launch draws near, one of the questions on watchers’ minds is how Motorola will position the Moto Tag in the market, particularly in terms of pricing. With rivals like a single Galaxy SmartTag2 fetching nearly $30, it remains to be seen how Motorola will compete on value.

With smart ecosystems expanding, the Moto Tag is a clear sign that Motorola is ready to innovate and offer consumers new ways of keeping track of their valuables. As users increasingly look for seamless connectivity and ease of use among their devices, the introduction of the Moto Tag could mark a significant step for Motorola in the smart device space. As the industry waits for more details, these smart tags signal a growing trend of tech that bridges the gap between personal security and the convenience of connected technology.
