Microsoft is preparing a cheaper Surface Laptop 13-inch, but it may still come with a premium price tag.
Microsoft recently refreshed its compact Surface Laptop 13-inch lineup with Intel’s Core Ultra 5 325 processor, positioning the device as a more powerful alternative within the company’s current laptop range. The updated model currently starts at $1,499 and includes 16GB of RAM, making it significantly more expensive than the previous generation.
While the price is higher, Microsoft is also adding a few upgrades to help justify the premium. The new Surface Laptop 13-inch features a display that is 25% brighter than the Snapdragon-powered version, which should improve visibility in bright rooms, offices, and outdoor environments. The laptop can also be configured with up to 24GB of RAM, giving users more flexibility for multitasking, productivity apps, and heavier workloads.
However, Microsoft has confirmed that a more affordable configuration is on the way. Instead of launching a completely separate budget-focused device, the company plans to expand the existing Surface Laptop 13-inch lineup with a lower-cost version.
The upcoming model will reportedly include 8GB of RAM and will arrive later this year. This will make it the entry-level option for the new Surface Laptop 13-inch family. The move could appeal to students, casual users, and buyers who want the Surface design and Windows experience without paying for the higher-memory configurations.
That said, the price may surprise some shoppers. Microsoft is expected to sell the 8GB RAM version for $1,299. Although this is cheaper than the current $1,499 starting model, it is still firmly in premium laptop territory. For buyers comparing entry-level laptops, the price gap between Microsoft’s new Surface configuration and other lower-cost notebooks may be hard to ignore.
The decision to offer only 8GB of RAM in a laptop priced above $1,000 may also raise questions. Many modern users now expect 16GB of RAM as a more future-proof baseline, especially for multitasking, web browsing with many tabs, video calls, document editing, and AI-powered features built into newer Windows devices. While 8GB may be enough for basic daily use, it could feel limiting over time for users who plan to keep their laptop for several years.
Still, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop line has always focused on more than just specifications. The series is known for its clean design, lightweight build, comfortable keyboard, premium materials, and tight integration with Windows. For users who value portability, display quality, and a refined laptop experience, the new lower-cost Surface Laptop 13-inch could still be attractive.
The upcoming 8GB Surface Laptop 13-inch will give Microsoft another option in its growing laptop lineup, especially for customers who want an Intel-powered Surface device at a slightly lower price. However, with a starting price of $1,299, this “cheaper” Surface Laptop is unlikely to be seen as a true budget laptop.
Microsoft is expected to release the 8GB RAM version of the Surface Laptop 13-inch later this year. Until then, the current model starts at $1,499 with 16GB of RAM, the Core Ultra 5 325 processor, a brighter display, and memory options reaching up to 24GB.
