Micron has officially launched its groundbreaking Gen 6.0 SSD, setting a new benchmark in the world of data center storage with the introduction of the 9650 SSD. Boasting impressive sequential read and write speeds, this innovation is poised to enhance data centers globally.
Leading the charge in high-performance storage, Micron introduced three new SSD models designed to revolutionize the data center landscape. By leveraging its proprietary G9 NAND technology, the company aims to deliver exceptional speed, capacity, and efficiency. This new lineup showcases Micron’s ability to integrate advanced controllers, NAND, DRAM, and firmware, offering unparalleled performance and energy efficiency.
The standout product, the Micron 9650, is the first PCIe 6.0 SSD available for data centers. It delivers blazing fast sequential read speeds of up to 28 GB/s and write speeds of 14 GB/s, effectively doubling the performance of PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Furthermore, the 9650 promises up to 25% improved efficiency in random writes and a remarkable 67% in random reads.
Adding to the excitement, the Micron 6600 ION is making waves with its colossal 122 TB storage capacity. This enterprise SSD uses the compact E3.S interface, typically capped at 15.36 TB, allowing it to match larger E3.L form-factor SSDs while maintaining a smaller footprint. Incredible storage capacities can be achieved with this model, reaching up to 4.42 PetaBytes in a 2U server setup, all while maintaining significant energy efficiency.
Rounding out the new offerings, the Micron 7600 SSD is a Gen 5 storage solution with exceptionally low latency—sub-1 millisecond—ideal for AI applications and mixed workloads. Available in multiple form factors, it offers versatility for various enterprise needs.
These cutting-edge SSDs are already making their way to Micron’s customers, with wider availability expected soon. The innovative 6600 ION SSD will begin shipping in the third quarter, with an upgrade to a massive 245 TB version anticipated in 2026.
