Rumors swirl around AMD’s plans for their next APU series, hinting at a potential delay for the anticipated Zen 5-based Ryzen lineup. Instead, whispers suggest a refreshed version of the Ryzen 8000G series could be on the horizon for the AM5 platform. This speculation emerges from discussions in tech forums, though official confirmation remains elusive.
The chatter points to AMD prioritizing a new Zen 4-based APU series featuring RDNA 3 graphics. This refresh could possibly be labeled under the Ryzen 9000G name, which leaves open the question of what the Zen 5 series will be called—perhaps the Ryzen 10000G. However, concrete details are still in the shadows.
Notably, this potential strategy indicates a longer lag for AMD’s desktop platform compared to its mobile counterpart. Earlier this year, AMD’s strongest mobile APUs set a high performance bar. The Strix Halo already surpasses both the Ryzen 8000G and the upcoming Strix Point in graphical power, with the latter anticipated to transform into the desktop Zen 5 series, known as Gorgon Point.
This means the Zen 5 architecture, paired with RDNA 3.5 technology, might have to wait longer before reaching desktop users. As it stands, the second half of 2025 is already underway, and if an 8000G refresh is indeed on the cards, the Zen 5-RDNA 3.5 APUs might not appear until the following year.
For those eyeing the refreshed Ryzen 8000G series, expectations should include modestly higher clock speeds and improved CPU and iGPU performance. However, they may fall short of challenging higher-end options like the Radeon 880M/890M. While offering better performance than the RDNA 3 iGPUs found in the Radeon 780M, they aren’t likely to dethrone current budget desktop graphics cards.
