Miami’s Real-Life Vice City Plans Hit a Roadblock After Sheriff Pushback

GTA 6 Marketing Plan in Miami-Dade Reportedly Faces Pushback Over “Vice City” Image

GTA 6 is set to take players back to Vice City, Rockstar Games’ fictional and satirical take on Miami, within the broader state of Leonida. With the game expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in years, it is no surprise that Rockstar reportedly looked at Miami-Dade County as a major real-world marketing opportunity.

According to a report from the Miami Herald, Rockstar explored a paid promotional partnership with local officials that would bring GTA 6 branding directly into Miami-Dade. The proposed campaign reportedly included eye-catching ideas such as “Welcome to Vice City” messages greeting travelers at Miami International Airport, GTA-themed Metromover trains running through the city, large outdoor billboards, and even Vice City logos placed on manhole covers.

For fans of the franchise, the concept sounds like a bold and memorable way to connect GTA 6’s fictional world with the real location that inspired it. However, not everyone in Miami-Dade appears excited about the idea of turning the county into a live-action Vice City advertisement.

One of the strongest objections reportedly comes from Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. Her concern is that the Grand Theft Auto series is closely associated with criminal themes, including robbery, murder, drug trafficking, car theft, and violence against law enforcement. From her perspective, those are the same crimes local authorities work to prevent every day, making the campaign potentially uncomfortable for official county involvement.

Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez has also reportedly questioned whether the promotion would be a good fit for Miami-Dade’s public image. He argued that the county has spent decades building a reputation as a global destination for tourism, business, investment, and opportunity. Promoting itself through the lens of a fictional crime-heavy version of Miami could clash with that carefully developed identity.

At the moment, it remains unclear whether the reported campaign is moving forward, being revised, or has been quietly shelved. No official agreement between Rockstar and Miami-Dade County has been confirmed, and the proposal has not been publicly rejected either.

The debate has already sparked strong reactions among GTA fans online. Many players are surprised by the criticism, pointing out that Miami has been associated with crime dramas and pop-culture portrayals for decades. Films and TV shows like Scarface, Miami Vice, and Dexter have all used the city’s atmosphere as a backdrop for darker stories, so some fans argue that GTA 6 is simply continuing a long entertainment tradition.

Others, however, understand why local officials may be cautious. There is a difference between Rockstar creating a fictional version of Miami for a video game and Miami-Dade officially embracing the “real-life Vice City” label in a government-backed marketing campaign. For some, the issue is not the game itself, but whether the county should actively promote that image.

GTA 6 remains one of the most anticipated games in the world, and its connection to Miami-inspired Vice City is a major part of the excitement. Whether or not Miami-Dade becomes part of the official promotional push, the discussion shows just how powerful the franchise’s cultural impact has become. A simple marketing idea has turned into a larger debate about tourism, public image, video game violence, and the complicated relationship between fiction and real places.
