NVIDIA GeForce Hotfix Driver 616.86 Released, But Major 8-Bit Monitor Flickering Issue Still Remains
NVIDIA has released the GeForce Hotfix Display Driver 616.86, bringing fixes for several recently reported problems affecting GeForce users. However, the update does not appear to address the widespread monitor flickering issue that many users have experienced since installing the GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56.
The most talked-about problem involves display flickering on monitors running at 8-bit color depth. Since the rollout of driver 616.56, many users have reported persistent flickering, especially on systems where switching to 10-bit color is not an option. NVIDIA has acknowledged the issue, but a dedicated fix has not yet been included in the latest public driver updates.
NVIDIA recently released Game Ready Driver 616.64, but its release notes did not mention a solution for the 8-bit display flickering bug. Now, the company has followed up with GeForce Hotfix Driver 616.86, which fixes three specific issues. One of those fixes does involve flickering, but not the monitor flickering problem that has been affecting a large number of users.
According to the hotfix details, driver 616.86 resolves intermittent flickering that may occur in certain web browsers when visiting specific websites. While this is a useful fix for users affected by browser-related visual glitches, it is separate from the broader display flickering issue tied to 8-bit monitor output.
The new hotfix also addresses a problem involving virtual display creation that appeared with Game Ready Driver 616.56. In addition, NVIDIA has fixed an issue where Remote Desktop Protocol sessions could result in a black screen when using the same driver branch.
These fixes suggest that GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56 introduced multiple bugs, some of which have now been corrected through this hotfix. Still, the biggest concern for many users remains unresolved. Those dealing with monitor flickering on 8-bit displays may have to wait for another update before the issue is fully fixed.
For now, users experiencing browser flickering, virtual display problems, or black screens during Remote Desktop sessions may want to install GeForce Hotfix Driver 616.86. Even though it does not directly target the widespread 8-bit display flickering bug, it may still improve stability for systems affected by the other known issues.
Many GeForce users will now be watching closely to see whether NVIDIA releases another hotfix or includes a proper monitor flickering fix in the next Game Ready Driver. Until then, users who cannot switch their displays to 10-bit color may continue to face the problem.
