In the highly competitive smartphone chipset market, MediaTek has emerged as the leading vendor, surpassing its rivals with strong performance at the end of 2023. This significant achievement is highlighted by recent data from a Canalys report, revealing MediaTek’s impressive market performance.
With the impressive Dimensity 9300 SoC and its family of chipsets, MediaTek has managed to ship a whopping 117 million units in the fourth quarter of 2023. This places the chipset manufacturer ahead of tech giants like Apple and Qualcomm, which shipped 78 million and 69 million units respectively during the same period.
Adding to this achievement, MediaTek experienced a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 21% in its shipments. Moreover, the company’s revenues soared by 22% YoY reaching the $23 billion mark. Although this was substantial growth for MediaTek, it was still outpaced by Apple’s $87 billion revenue and Qualcomm’s $30 billion. Despite this, Qualcomm faced a minor setback with a decrease of 2% in growth compared to the previous year.
While Samsung’s Exynos processors saw a decline in earnings by 44% YoY, there was clear evidence of reliance on third-party chips during the fourth quarter of 2023. Samsung sourced 40% of Qualcomm’s revenue and a significant 25% of MediaTek’s income for that period.
Xiaomi stood out as Qualcomm’s primary buyer for the quarter, with 25% of the chipmaker’s shipments going to the smartphone brand. On the other hand, MediaTek saw Samsung as its largest customer, followed closely by Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO, which accounted for significant portions of its shipments as well.
Unisoc marked its presence with a 24% YoY growth in both revenues and shipments, hinting at rising prominence in the market. Its growth was primarily fuelled by the demand from Transsion brands, with Realme and Lenovo also contributing thanks to their budget smartphone offerings in the latter part of 2023.
In contrast, Google’s exclusive use of its Tensor chips for the Pixel series resulted in relatively low shipment and revenue figures—3 million units and $2 billion, respectively—pointing perhaps to the Pixel series’ limited market presence.
On a more dramatic note, Huawei displayed signs of a resurgence with an impressive 5,121% YoY growth, delivering 7 million units worldwide. This comeback is remarkable considering Huawei’s previous silence in the market over the past years.
The dynamic shifts in the smartphone chipset industry mark a notable period of growth and challenge. MediaTek’s rise to the top underscores its successful strategies and high-performing SoC solutions that appeal to a wide range of smartphone manufacturers. As the competition intensifies, it will be intriguing to see how the market continues to evolve and which manufacturers will lead the innovation charge in the years to come.
