Google has recently introduced an update to Android Auto, now at version 11.4, which introduces a practical new safety feature. This update adds a visual indicator on app icons that can only be used when the vehicle is stationary. Apps that are not usable while the vehicle is moving now display a circular badge with a red “P” inside, visible directly within the app drawer.
In a bid to improve driver safety by minimizing distractions, Android Auto has a selection of apps that are designated for use exclusively when the car is parked. This encompasses apps that could potentially divert the driver’s attention, such as gaming platforms like GameSnacks, which houses a collection of casual games ideal for moments like waiting for an electric vehicle to charge. Prior to this update, any attempt to access these apps while driving would result in an error message advising the user to park the vehicle in order to proceed.
The latest update takes a more proactive approach by rendering the icons of these particular apps in grayscale and unclickable, further discouraging any attempts to engage with them while driving. Once the vehicle is securely parked, the red “P” badge disappears, and the app icons return to their normal coloration, signifying that they are once again accessible for use. This feature enhancement is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve Android Auto’s functionality and user experience, which includes recent additions like the ability to summarize messages for the user.
The integration of such features underscores Google’s commitment to driver safety and ensuring that the distractions while driving are minimized. This visual cue is a simple yet effective way to remind drivers of the need to remain focused on the road and could potentially reduce the temptation to use certain apps while behind the wheel.
