MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Series Could Arrive With Higher Prices as Chip Costs Rise
The smartphone chip market may be heading into another round of price increases, and MediaTek’s next-generation flagship processors could be among the products affected. The company is reportedly preparing to raise prices for its upcoming Dimensity 9600 and Dimensity 9600 Pro chipsets as cost pressures continue to build across the consumer electronics supply chain.
The move comes at a time when manufacturers are dealing with higher expenses at multiple stages of production, from advanced semiconductor manufacturing to packaging, components, logistics, and device assembly. While price increases are never welcome news for smartphone brands or buyers, the premium mobile processor segment has become especially expensive as chipmakers push toward more advanced manufacturing nodes and more powerful CPU designs.
MediaTek’s stronger position in the market appears to be giving it more room to adjust prices. Demand for new smartphones is improving in several emerging markets, while handset makers are also rebuilding inventory ahead of upcoming launches. That combination could allow MediaTek to raise prices not only for flagship mobile processors but also for connectivity chips and smart device components.
However, the expected price increases may not apply evenly across the company’s full product lineup. Lower-end consumer chips remain highly price-sensitive, meaning manufacturers may resist major cost increases in budget and entry-level devices. Instead, the biggest adjustments are more likely to appear in higher-performance products where brands are willing to pay more for better efficiency, stronger AI performance, and flagship-class processing power.
The Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to be MediaTek’s most advanced mobile chipset yet. It is rumored to use TSMC’s N2P process node, a newer and more advanced manufacturing technology designed to deliver better performance and power efficiency. The chip is also expected to feature a high-end CPU configuration built around ARM’s next-generation cores.
The rumored CPU layout for the Dimensity 9600 Pro includes:
2 ARM C2-Ultra cores running at around 5GHz
3 ARM C2-Premium cores
3 ARM C2-Pro cores
If accurate, this design would position the Dimensity 9600 Pro as a serious competitor in the flagship Android smartphone processor market. A clock speed close to 5GHz would represent a major performance push, especially for demanding tasks such as mobile gaming, AI processing, multitasking, and high-resolution video workflows.
The standard Dimensity 9600 is expected to take a slightly more cost-conscious approach. It may use TSMC’s N2 process instead of the more advanced N2P node. It could also support LPDDR5X memory, while the Pro version may move to faster LPDDR6 RAM. That difference would help MediaTek separate the two chips more clearly, giving smartphone makers options depending on pricing, performance targets, and device positioning.
Pricing will be one of the most important factors to watch. The current Dimensity 9500 reportedly costs around $180 to $200 per unit. By comparison, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is said to cost roughly $280 per unit. That gives MediaTek’s flagship chip a significant price advantage of around 28 percent, making it attractive to smartphone brands that want premium performance without paying the highest chipset prices.
The next wave of flagship processors could narrow that gap. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is expected to cost more than $300, and if MediaTek maintains a similar relative pricing strategy, the Dimensity 9600 Pro could land above $216 per unit.
Even at that level, MediaTek may still retain a pricing advantage over its main rival in the flagship Android chip market. That could make the Dimensity 9600 Pro an appealing choice for smartphone manufacturers looking to deliver high-end performance while keeping overall device costs under control.
For consumers, the bigger question is whether these chipset price increases will eventually affect smartphone prices. Premium phones are already becoming more expensive as brands add brighter displays, larger batteries, advanced camera systems, AI features, and more powerful processors. If component costs continue to rise, some upcoming flagship Android phones using the Dimensity 9600 series may also arrive with higher launch prices.
Still, the Dimensity 9600 and Dimensity 9600 Pro could play a key role in MediaTek’s continued push into the premium smartphone market. With advanced TSMC manufacturing, next-generation ARM CPU cores, possible LPDDR6 support, and competitive pricing against Snapdragon alternatives, MediaTek’s next flagship chips may become some of the most important mobile processors to watch in the coming year.
