In a thrilling development for the world of electric vehicle racing, TDK has joined forces with McLaren Racing for an innovative partnership in Formula E. Known primarily as a major supplier of batteries to top smartphone manufacturers like Apple, TDK is leveraging its technological prowess to make a significant impact in this high-octane field. Historically, TDK was a leading name in the cassette tape market, a legacy that has given way to its current status as the world’s largest supplier of smartphone batteries. This foray into Formula E provides an exciting avenue for TDK to hone cutting-edge technologies that may soon benefit consumers.
The collaboration with McLaren Racing, a team with rich tradition established in 1963, is a strategic move by TDK as they and McLaren aim to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology. McLaren made its Formula E debut in the 2022-2023 season, kicking off with the 2023 Mexico City ePrix. TDK’s aspirations are echoed by their Electronic Components Business Company CEO, Taro Iukushima, who stated that “Formula E technology is always at the cutting edge of EVs, and we want them to utilize our components so we can sharpen our technology.” The components TDK plans to use include advanced ceramic capacitors and temperature sensors, among others.
Founded in 1935, TDK now dedicates approximately a quarter of its sales to the automotive industry. This year has seen an impressive 39% rise in TDK’s shares, outperforming Japan’s broader Topix index, which grew by 13%. The partnership with McLaren Racing builds on a robust track record in Formula E, where the team has already claimed four pole positions, three podium finishes, one victory, and 189 points after participating in 32 races. Notably, they made history with the first AI-designed livery at the 2023 London ePrix.
While TDK’s glory days in cassette tapes may be behind it, enthusiasts of vintage audio can still find nostalgia-evoking TDK products online. This partnership with McLaren signals a forward-looking chapter for TDK, marrying their technological innovation with a passion for automotive excellence on the race tracks of Formula E.
