MapQuest Tops U.S. App Charts After Rejecting Trump’s “Lake America” Name Change

MapQuest Surges to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store After Refusing to Rename Lake Ontario

MapQuest is suddenly back in the spotlight, and its comeback is bigger than almost anyone expected. The classic mapping app, once the go-to name for online directions, climbed to the No. 1 overall position on the U.S. App Store this week, beating out every other app and game.

The unexpected rise came after MapQuest took a public stand against renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Following an August 27 executive order from President Trump directing the U.S. geographic naming authority to adopt the new name, MapQuest announced that it would keep using the traditional name, Lake Ontario.

That decision quickly caught the attention of users across the United States and Canada. While larger mapping platforms changed the lake’s name in line with official government data, MapQuest’s refusal turned into a viral moment. Many people began downloading the app as a way to support the company’s position.

The numbers show just how fast the momentum built. MapQuest ranked No. 128 on the U.S. App Store on August 28. A day later, it moved up to No. 92. By Monday, August 31, it had jumped to No. 3 overall and reached No. 1 in the Navigation category. By Tuesday, MapQuest had claimed the No. 1 overall spot across the entire U.S. App Store.

Recent market estimates suggest the app was downloaded around 632,000 times in the U.S. after the executive order. MapQuest, however, says the total is even higher, with more than 1.5 million installs across the U.S. and Canada combined.

What makes the surge especially important is that many new users are not simply downloading the app and forgetting about it. According to MapQuest leadership, people are actively using the app, sending feedback, requesting new features, and reporting bugs through app reviews and social media.

MapQuest general manager Doug Berger said the response has been remarkable, noting that users are engaging directly with the company and helping shape improvements to the app. He said the team has been working hard to respond to feature requests and improve the overall experience for new and returning users.

The spike in downloads has dramatically changed MapQuest’s year-to-date performance. More than half of its U.S. downloads so far this year reportedly happened between August 27 and September 1. During that period, daily downloads rose sharply and were more than 50 times higher than the same stretch last year.

Part of the reason MapQuest’s decision resonated is that it stood apart from its much larger competitors. Big mapping platforms typically update geographic names based on official government sources. MapQuest, as a smaller and more independent player in the navigation app market, had more flexibility to take a different approach.

This is not the first time MapQuest has kept a traditional geographic name despite official or political pressure. The app still uses “Gulf of Mexico” rather than “Gulf of America.” It also leaned into the Lake Ontario debate with a lighthearted online feature that lets users jokingly rename the lake and share the result on social media.

MapQuest’s sudden rise is a reminder of how quickly public sentiment can change the fortunes of a familiar brand. Once considered the original online mapping service, MapQuest gradually lost its dominance as newer navigation apps became the default choice for many users. But this moment has brought renewed attention to the platform and introduced it to a new wave of mobile users.

Today, MapQuest is owned by System1, an internet advertising company that acquired the brand from Verizon in 2019. Verizon had previously gained the property through its acquisition of AOL.

Whether this surge becomes a long-term revival remains to be seen. But for now, MapQuest has done something few would have predicted: it turned a naming controversy into a major App Store victory and reminded millions of users that the original mapping app is still around.
