Maingear is responding to soaring DDR5 prices and ongoing supply headaches with a new option for custom desktops: systems that ship without memory installed. The company’s newly announced “BYO RAM Builds” (Build Your Own RAM) are designed for gamers and creators who want a high-end pre-built PC now, but don’t want to be forced into paying inflated RAM pricing at checkout.
DDR5 costs have been unpredictable for months, and the situation hasn’t helped anyone shopping for a new gaming PC. With demand climbing and inventory uneven across popular DDR5 speeds and capacities, even pre-built PC pricing has been bouncing around. Maingear’s solution is simple: let buyers purchase a desktop configuration without DDR5 included, then add memory separately on their own terms.
With BYO RAM Builds, customers can either bring a compatible DDR5 kit for Maingear to install during the build, or buy a supported kit from an outside retailer and ship it directly to Maingear. In both cases, Maingear says the system still goes through its normal validation and testing process before it’s sent out, so the end result is a fully built, ready-to-game PC—just with memory sourced by the customer instead of bundled into the build price.
The biggest advantage is flexibility. If you already have DDR5 sitting in a previous build, you may be able to reuse it. If you don’t, you can watch for discounts and time your purchase instead of being locked into whatever the market looks like on the day you order your PC. While current deals may not match what buyers saw months ago, being able to shop around can still reduce the overall cost of a new system and prevent RAM from becoming the make-or-break component in finishing a build.
Maingear points to a “perfect storm” behind the DDR5 mess: stronger demand from AI infrastructure, tighter allocation from major manufacturers, and limited availability across the most popular configurations. The result has been price spikes, inconsistent stock, and a “buy it when you see it” scramble that’s frustrated DIY builders and pre-built shoppers alike.
For anyone considering a pre-built gaming PC but hesitating because DDR5 pricing feels out of control, Maingear’s RAM-less configurations offer a practical workaround: secure the desktop you want, then add memory when you find the right kit at the right price—without giving up the convenience of a professionally assembled and tested system.
