Many Intel-based MacBook Pro owners still rely on their machines every day, even as Apple Silicon models continue to dominate the spotlight. These older laptops remain capable, but they are also known for one major weakness: heat. High fan noise, warm chassis temperatures, and disappointing battery life are common complaints, especially when running Windows through Boot Camp.

One 2019 MacBook Pro owner has now found a surprisingly effective fix. By lowering the display refresh rate from 60Hz to 48Hz, the user managed to dramatically reduce the idle power draw of the dedicated AMD GPU, helping the laptop run cooler, quieter, and longer on battery.

The MacBook Pro in question is equipped with an Intel Core i9 processor and AMD Radeon Pro 5300M graphics. While that hardware was powerful for its time, it is also known for consuming a lot of power and generating plenty of heat. The owner was using Windows via Boot Camp as a daily operating system, which made the thermal issues even more noticeable.

Windows on Boot Camp often lacks some of the power management advantages available in macOS. As a result, battery life can suffer, fans can spin up more often, and internal temperatures can remain higher than expected. The user initially tried common fixes, including limiting CPU power, reducing Turbo Boost behavior, and adjusting Windows power settings. However, none of those changes solved the main issue.

The real problem appeared to be the Radeon Pro 5300M. Even while the MacBook Pro was idle, the GPU remained active and its memory clock stayed high when the display was running at 60Hz. That constant activity caused unnecessary power use and extra heat.

The breakthrough came when the user discovered that switching the screen refresh rate to 48Hz allowed the GPU to settle into a much lower-power state. The problem was that Windows Boot Camp did not provide a built-in 48Hz option for the MacBook Pro display.

Instead of giving up, the owner created a custom open-source utility that adds and automates a 48Hz display mode in Windows. Once enabled, the results were significant.

The Radeon Pro 5300M’s idle power draw reportedly dropped from around 14W to just 3W. That is a reduction of almost 80 percent. Temperatures also improved, falling from about 66°C to roughly 51°C during idle use. With less heat being produced, the fans did not need to work as hard, making the laptop quieter in normal use.

This kind of improvement is especially valuable for users still holding on to Intel MacBook Pro models. While Apple Silicon laptops offer much better efficiency, not everyone is ready or able to upgrade. Some users need Boot Camp for Windows-only software, gaming, development tools, or professional workflows that are not ideal on macOS or virtualization.

For those users, reducing GPU idle power can make a noticeable difference. Lower temperatures can improve comfort, extend battery life, reduce fan noise, and potentially help the hardware age more gracefully. It also shows how a small display setting can have a major effect on power behavior, especially in systems with dedicated graphics.

The tweak may not be necessary for everyone, and results can vary depending on the exact MacBook Pro model, GPU, drivers, and Windows setup. Still, for owners of Intel MacBook Pro systems running Boot Camp, experimenting with a 48Hz refresh rate could be a practical way to reduce heat and improve everyday usability.
