Lenovo is gearing up to launch its latest budget-friendly gaming handheld, known as the Legion Go S, which promises to hold its own against more mainstream devices like the ROG Ally X. Packed with a Ryzen Z2 Go chip based on the Zen 4 architecture, it showcases impressive capability despite being slightly behind the more powerful competition.
In a recent comparison with the ROG Ally X, the Legion Go S demonstrated it’s about 10% slower across various power modes in games like Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, and Ghost of Tsushima. While the ROG Ally X utilizes the Z1 Extreme chip—offering 8 cores and 16 threads with a faster 5.1 GHz boost clock— the Legion Go S’s Ryzen Z2 Go chip features a modest 4 cores and 8 threads. However, it still manages to impress, producing frame rates that are not far off from its pricier rival.
For frame rates, when running at 15W, the Legion Go S achieved 36 fps in Black Myth: Wukong, 50 fps in Cyberpunk 2077, and 62 fps in Ghost of Tsushima. Comparatively, the ROG Ally X managed slightly higher fps at the same settings. This tight performance gap underscores the capabilities of the Legion Go S, offering robust performance at an anticipated price of $599 with a Windows OS and even lower at $499 with Steam OS.
This makes the Legion Go S a compelling choice for gamers on a budget, providing an excellent performance-to-price ratio compared to the ROG Ally X, which hit the market at $799. While it may not boast the same range of features, the Legion Go S positions itself as an attractive option for users seeking a quality gaming experience at a more affordable price.
