Rocksteady Secretly Helped Build Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is shaping up to be more than just another charming brick-built superhero adventure. The upcoming game from TT Games appears to carry a surprising amount of Batman: Arkham DNA, and now there is a clear reason why: Rocksteady Studios quietly contributed to the project as a co-developer.
From its first impressions, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight feels instantly familiar to longtime Batman game fans. The open-world Gotham City, fluid gliding, grappling, stealth takedowns, and rhythmic combat all echo the style that made the Batman: Arkham series so influential. While TT Games has clearly added its signature Lego humor and family-friendly tone, the gameplay foundation has been shaped with help from developers who know Batman games extremely well.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the fourth main entry in TT Games’ Lego Batman series. This time, the formula is expanding into a larger open-world Gotham, giving players the freedom to explore the city, battle criminals, meet iconic villains, and experience a playful take on Batman’s long history across comics, films, TV shows, and video games.
The game is designed to blend classic Batman storytelling with the light-hearted comedy that Lego games are known for. Players can expect a mix of superhero action, puzzle-solving, collectibles, character-driven moments, and plenty of jokes aimed at both younger audiences and longtime DC fans.
One of the biggest surprises is the confirmation that Rocksteady was involved in development. The studio, best known for its work on the Batman: Arkham games, is credited as a co-developer on Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. This goes beyond simple inspiration, as multiple Rocksteady staff members reportedly contributed directly to the game.
According to the game’s credits, 24 developers from Rocksteady worked on the project. The list includes a designer, a producer, senior programmers, and artists. Warner Bros. Games Montreal, the studio associated with Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, is also credited, making this a broader Batman game collaboration than many fans expected.
TT Games’ head of development, Jonathan Smith, also acknowledged the influence of Rocksteady’s past work. He explained that it is nearly impossible to create a modern Batman video game without recognizing what Rocksteady achieved with Arkham Asylum and its combat system. Smith described that system as a generational achievement and said it naturally serves as a foundation for representing Batman’s fighting style in a modern game.
That statement helps explain why Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight feels so familiar while still having its own identity. The game is not trying to be a dark, mature Arkham sequel. Instead, it seems to be taking the satisfying structure of Arkham-style combat and exploration, then rebuilding it through the colorful, comedic lens of Lego.
The release has also been surrounded by unexpected early access issues. Some Xbox Series X|S players who pre-loaded Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight reportedly gained access to the game about a week ahead of its official launch due to a pre-load glitch. In addition, unencrypted game files appeared online before release, which led to unauthorized access to the upcoming title.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is officially scheduled to launch on May 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned for a later date.
For Batman fans, the involvement of Rocksteady adds an exciting new layer of interest. TT Games already has a strong reputation for turning major franchises into accessible, humorous Lego adventures, but pairing that formula with expertise from developers behind some of the most beloved Batman games ever made could make Legacy of the Dark Knight one of the most ambitious Lego superhero games to date.
With open-world Gotham exploration, Arkham-inspired combat, iconic villains, and classic Lego charm, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight could be the Batman game that appeals to both longtime Arkham fans and families looking for a fun superhero adventure.
