Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake for Switch 2 Reportedly Won’t Be a 1:1 Recreation
The rumored remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 may be far more ambitious than fans first expected. Instead of simply updating the visuals of the beloved 1998 Nintendo 64 classic, new leaks suggest Nintendo is preparing a broader reimagining with modern gameplay changes, expanded environments, and possibly fresh content.
Following Nintendo’s June Direct, excitement around the return of Ocarina of Time has continued to grow. While many players expected a faithful remake with improved graphics, recent claims point toward a project that could rethink major parts of the original adventure while keeping its core identity intact.
According to Nintendo insider Necro Filipe, the upcoming Switch 2 version will not be a strict 1:1 remake. The leaker claimed that the development team has introduced a wide range of modernizations and has completely reworked certain gameplay systems. If accurate, this means longtime fans may experience a familiar version of Hyrule that feels much larger, smoother, and more in line with modern Zelda design.
That approach would make sense for one of Nintendo’s most influential games. Ocarina of Time helped define 3D action-adventure games when it launched in 1998, but player expectations have changed dramatically since then. After the success of large-scale Zelda entries with open-ended exploration, a simple frame-by-frame remake may not feel ambitious enough for a new generation of hardware.
More fuel was added to the speculation after retail database leaks suggested that Monolith Soft may be involved in the project. The studio is widely associated with large, detailed worlds, which has led many fans to believe the Ocarina of Time remake could feature a significantly expanded version of Hyrule. This could include larger fields, redesigned locations, new secrets, and possibly additional dungeons that were not present in the original game.
If Monolith Soft is playing a major development role, the remake may lean into exploration more heavily than the Nintendo 64 version. Iconic areas such as Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Field, Death Mountain, Zora’s Domain, and Gerudo Valley could be rebuilt with more verticality, greater detail, and smoother transitions between zones.
The leaks also suggest Nintendo may be planning a major product launch around the game. A French retailer reportedly published internal listings too early, revealing what appear to be multiple Ocarina of Time-related products. These listings included a standalone Collector’s Edition, a themed Nintendo Switch 2 console, and a custom Pro Controller inspired by the game.
A Collector’s Edition would not be surprising, especially given the importance of Ocarina of Time in Nintendo’s history. The game remains one of the most celebrated entries in The Legend of Zelda series, and a premium release would likely appeal to both longtime fans and collectors.
For now, Nintendo has not confirmed the full scope of the remake or detailed how different it will be from the original. However, the growing number of leaks points to a project that may go beyond a simple visual upgrade. If the reports prove accurate, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2 could become a major reimagining of one of gaming’s most iconic adventures.
Rather than replacing the original, this remake may aim to reinterpret it for modern players while preserving the atmosphere, music, characters, and emotional moments that made the 1998 classic unforgettable. For Zelda fans, the possibility of returning to a larger and more dynamic Hyrule could make this one of the most anticipated Switch 2 releases yet.
