A new leak suggests DJI’s next big rival in the pocket gimbal camera market may already have a name: Insta360 Luna Ultra. With the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 expected to debut on April 16, this rumored newcomer is shaping up to be a serious challenger—especially for creators who care about hands-on control, battery life, and zoom flexibility.
DJI’s Osmo Pocket line has been a runaway success, and the Osmo Pocket 3 in particular has ranked among the best-selling video cameras worldwide in recent years. That kind of momentum naturally attracts competitors, and the latest rumor points to Insta360 stepping in with a product designed to go straight for DJI’s crown.
The leak claims the Insta360 Luna Ultra will use a 1,550 mAh battery, which would top the Osmo Pocket 3’s 1,300 mAh capacity. If accurate, that extra battery headroom could translate into longer shooting sessions—an immediate quality-of-life win for travelers, vloggers, and anyone filming events without constant access to charging.
Where the Luna Ultra could really separate itself, though, is camera hardware. Leaked images reportedly show a dual-camera layout, and the chatter suggests this may enable a 3x optical zoom. A true optical zoom in a compact gimbal camera can be a major advantage, letting creators reframe shots without sacrificing image quality the way digital zoom often does.
There’s also growing curiosity about whether “Ultra” is the only model coming. It’s not yet clear if this is the same Insta360 Luna device seen in earlier leaks, or if Insta360 is preparing multiple versions. One possibility is a standard Luna model with a single camera meant to compete directly with the Osmo Pocket 4, alongside a dual-camera Luna Ultra that targets power users. Interestingly, similar rumors have also floated around about a potential dual-camera “Pocket 4 Pro,” though nothing official has confirmed such a model.
Another area where the Insta360 Luna Ultra could win over creators is physical controls. The leak describes a design with more dedicated buttons and tactile inputs than what’s expected from DJI’s next Pocket camera. Allegedly, the Luna Ultra includes a joystick, a dedicated zoom lever, a record button, and two extra buttons near the rotating display. Those additional buttons may allow fast access to customizable settings such as ISO, gimbal lock modes, or audio levels—exactly the kind of quick control that makes filming smoother when you’re working fast.
Finally, the Luna Ultra is rumored to be modular. What that means in practice is still up in the air. It could be something as simple as magnetic add-ons, similar to how some compact cameras support snap-on accessories. Or it could hint at a more expandable system with swappable components. Either way, modularity could give Insta360 a strong angle for creators who want to build a flexible pocket filming kit without jumping to a full-size camera setup.
With the Osmo Pocket 4 launch right around the corner, this leak adds a new layer of excitement to the compact gimbal camera space. If the rumored battery upgrade, dual-camera zoom approach, and extra physical controls are real, the Insta360 Luna Ultra could quickly become one of the most talked-about pocket gimbal cameras of the year.
