“League of Legends Introduces Exciting WASD Controls After 15 Years”

Riot Games is shaking things up for “League of Legends” by introducing a new WASD control scheme. Nearly 16 years since the game’s release on October 27, 2009, this iconic MOBA is set to offer players an alternative to its traditional point-and-click method.

The decision to incorporate WASD controls aims to make the game more accessible to both new and returning players. Instead of solely relying on clicking, players can now maneuver their champions using the well-known W, A, S, and D keys.

In a recent development update, Riot Games shared their vision: “Offering WASD controls provides a fresh yet familiar gameplay style, helping both newcomers and veterans enjoy Summoner’s Rift without altering what makes League so beloved.”

Recognizing that WASD is the go-to control scheme for many PC titles, Riot believes this addition will create a more intuitive experience for players transitioning from other games.

This change has the potential to ease the learning curve of League’s complex strategies, making it less daunting for beginners. Despite its intricacies, the game enjoys a vibrant community with an estimated 13 million active monthly players and over 3.2 million daily participants.

The new control scheme will debut in an extended public beta on the game’s Public Beta Environment. This testing phase is set to begin in late August and will span several patches, allowing for player feedback and adjustments.

Internal tests have already highlighted areas for improvement, such as kiting and movement during attacks, while ensuring no unfair advantages arise. These insights were drawn from player labs and demos at the Mid-Season Invitational 2025.

Following the beta, the WASD option will initially be available in non-ranked modes like casual Summoner’s Rift and All Random All Mid 5v5. Eventually, after further refinements, it will become accessible in ranked and professional play.

Riot Games has expressed that the WASD scheme is just the beginning of a series of long-term projects aimed at shaping the future of “League of Legends.”
