As the tech industry faces a wave of significant lay-offs in early 2024, Riot Games, the developer behind popular titles such as Valorant and League of Legends, has joined the trend by announcing a substantial cut of 530 jobs, representing an 11% reduction in its global workforce.
As other tech giants continue to streamline their operations, the gaming industry is not immune to the economic pressures. Riot Games’ lay-offs come with a comprehensive severance package designed to ease the transition for those affected. According to a company-wide e-mail from CEO Dylan Jadeja, the severance deal includes a minimum of six months’ salary, a cash bonus reflecting the previous year’s performance bonus, and half a year of career transition services.
Riot is providing additional support for international employees reliant on work visas, with aid determined on an individual basis. Moreover, the video game maker is allowing personnel to retain issued peripherals and even get a company laptop if needed for home use.
Looking ahead, Riot Games reaffirmed its dedication to its flagship titles, promising an intensified focus on its primary games, which includes expanding content and updates for League of Legends and Valorant. The company shared its vision that these games will provide vibrant experiences for potentially decades, as evidenced by the recent player update from Riot Games. Furthermore, Riot is adjusting its strategy with Legends of Runeterra to enhance sustainability and has also decided to halt further development and publishing of games via its Riot Forge subdivision following the release of ‘Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story’.
The company’s transparent approach in handling these lay-offs— especially the offered severance and assistance—has been received positively, contrasting the often abrupt and impersonal nature of corporate downsizing.
