During the Q4 earnings call, Musk revealed Tesla’s timeline for unleashing its autonomous vehicles onto public roads. The rollout is set to commence in June in Austin with a fleet primarily comprising the 2026 Model Y and updated Model 3, equipped with Tesla’s latest HW4 kits. Musk described the approach as cautious, likening it to testing the waters to ensure safety and system efficacy before expanding further.
This new Tesla fleet will herald the era of driverless transportation, starting with Austin and then gradually encompassing California and broader US cities by year-end. Once Tesla perfects its unsupervised FSD and the accompanying ride-share platform elements such as safety, hailing operations, and payment systems, the initiative will open to Tesla owners in the following year. Texas and California stand as the launchpad for this autonomous dream due to their relatively conducive regulatory environments for such innovations. In anticipation of this, Tesla conducted training sessions with Austin’s first responders to acquaint them with driverless vehicles, signaling the company’s choice of Texas as the pioneering site for this revolutionary service.
Initially, Tesla will operate the robotaxi service with its own vehicles. The program will later be open to private car owners willing to rent out their Teslas for short or extended periods in 2026. The future also promises the introduction of the Cybercab—a futuristic two-seater with neither a steering wheel nor pedals—merging seamlessly with the platform in 2026.
