KT Pocket is back in the spotlight with fresh details about its long-awaited second handheld gaming device, the KT-R1S. Interest in this follow-up has been building for a while, especially because the original KT-R1 had a notoriously long road to release.
For anyone needing a quick recap, the KT-R1 first appeared in early 2023, after more than two years of waiting. Since then, the handheld gaming market has moved quickly, and the hardware landscape has changed. The KT-R1 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99, a chipset that has become far more common across budget and midrange Android handhelds over the last few years. In other words, what once felt more distinctive now faces heavier competition as newer devices and updated chips have arrived.
Even so, KT Pocket appears ready to make the KT-R1S stand out in a different way: configuration choice. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all layout, the company is planning at least two physical variants based on the images shared so far. One model places the left analog stick above the D-pad (a layout many players prefer for modern action games and 3D titles). The other version flips that arrangement, putting the D-pad on top and shifting the left stick beneath it, which may appeal more to retro-focused players who prioritize D-pad comfort for classic console emulation.
That flexibility could be a smart move in a crowded portable gaming market, where comfort and control layout often matter just as much as raw performance. By letting players choose the layout that matches how they actually play, KT Pocket may be aiming to attract both retro enthusiasts and modern emulation fans without forcing one design compromise.
Pricing and availability details still haven’t been confirmed, but current chatter suggests that pre-orders could open soon. For now, the KT-R1S is officially on the radar, and with launch seemingly close, handheld gaming fans who’ve been watching KT Pocket may not have to wait much longer to see what the company delivers next.
