Kioxia has made headlines by introducing a groundbreaking 245.76 TB model in their LC9 Series NVMe SSD lineup. This launch sets a new benchmark in storage capacity for both 2.5-inch and EDSFF E3.L formats, effectively doubling the previous top capacity of 122.88 TB.
This impressive development is designed to meet the demanding requirements of data centers where space optimization is crucial. The LC9’s massive storage capabilities are particularly beneficial for applications like generative AI training and vector databases, where fast and efficient data retrieval is essential. Kioxia focuses on resolving I/O bottlenecks that could otherwise slow down processes during critical data intake and analysis phases.
The LC9 Series leverages cutting-edge technology by stacking 32 of Kioxia’s 2 Tbit BiCS FLASH QLC dies, using a CMOS-direct-bonded-to-array approach to pack an incredible 8 TB into a single NAND package. This innovation marks an industry first. The device is equipped with a PCIe 5.0 x4 (dual-port) NVMe 2.0 controller, achieving sequential read speeds of up to 12 GB/s and write speeds of 3 GB/s, which ensures efficient performance despite the drive’s high density.
In terms of random throughput, the drive achieves about 1.3 million IOPS for read operations and 50,000 IOPS for write operations. It is designed for endurance, supporting 0.3 DWPD for typical hyperscale workloads. To ensure reliability, the SSD includes features like die-level recovery, parity-based error management, and power-loss protection, with Flexible Data Placement to minimize write amplification.
Kioxia is currently providing the 245 TB LC9 to select strategic partners, with plans to offer volume units in 2.5-inch U.2 (up to 122.88 TB), E3.S (up to 122.88 TB), and E3.L (245.76 TB) formats. A public showcase is scheduled for the Future of Memory and Storage conference in August 2025. This development marks a significant leap forward in storage technology, poised to transform the landscape of data management and retrieval.
