While it almost offers a complete 100% layout, it cleverly replaces the standard navigation cluster with a compact column that includes page up, page down, and home keys. Above the num pad, you’ll find three customizable shortcut keys, creating a nearly full 104-key layout experience. Additionally, there’s a versatile knob in the top left corner, defaulted to volume control but easily programmable for other functions or macros.
Similar to the Keychron K4 HE, this keyboard is equipped with Gateron Double-Rail Magnetic Nebula switches, praised for their smooth performance and clean sound. The Q12 HE employs a gasket mount design to reduce unpleasant auditory feedback while offering a slightly cushioned typing experience. Constructed with CNC aluminum and finished with an e-coat in Shell White or Carbon Black, this design ensures a refined aesthetic. Unlike the Q13 Max’s PC plate, the Q12 HE features an aluminum plate, promising a brighter sound and improved input accuracy.
The Q12 HE sports double-shot PBT keycaps in Keychron’s OSA profile, which are not shine-through. While they match the height of typical gaming keyboards, they deliver a distinctive look. Despite their slightly thin build, these keycaps feel good to type on. The keyboard features south-facing per-key RGB backlighting, which might limit compatibility with alternative shine-through keycaps.
Although it lacks the 8 kHz polling rate found in some gaming keyboards like the Wooting 80HE, the Q12 HE offers a solid 1 kHz polling rate suitable for most gaming needs.
