KEMURI Xbox Version Not Planned as Studio Prioritizes Team Well-Being
KEMURI does not appear to be heading to Xbox anytime soon. According to UNSEEN founder Ikumi Nakamura, the studio is currently focused on developing the game for PC first, with Nintendo and PlayStation versions being considered as part of the broader release plan.
During a community Q&A, Nakamura made it clear that an Xbox port is not currently in the cards. Her explanation was not framed around platform preference or technical barriers, but around the reality of development resources at a small independent studio.
“No! No. I just want people to understand that porting takes a lot of work. We develop the game for PC first. Then bringing it to Nintendo or PlayStation,” Nakamura said while responding to fan questions.
She went on to explain that UNSEEN does not have the same staffing power as a major publisher. Larger companies often have dedicated teams that specialize in bringing games to different platforms. For KEMURI, however, that responsibility would fall on the studio’s existing engineers, creating an additional workload that Nakamura is unwilling to force on them.
“At a big company you usually have dedicated people to do that. But we’re a really small studio,” Nakamura said. “If we had to do the porting ourselves our engineers would be exhausted. I’d rather prioritize people’s lives. I don’t want anyone dying just to release an Xbox version. People come first. That’s all.”
Her comments highlight a growing conversation in the games industry about sustainability, crunch, and the pressure placed on developers to support as many platforms as possible. While Xbox players may be disappointed, Nakamura’s stance is clear: the health of the development team comes before expanding the release to another console.
Some fans have speculated about whether the decision is connected to Nakamura’s past work at Tango Gameworks, which was later shut down by Microsoft. Others have questioned why Nintendo and PlayStation were mentioned while Xbox was directly ruled out. However, nothing from the Q&A confirms that personal feelings, business conflicts, or technical limitations played a role in the decision.
For now, KEMURI is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PC, with a planned release in 2027. The game is a yokai-inspired action title that can be played solo or in online co-op with up to three players. Players take on the role of hunters who form contracts with supernatural beings, gaining special powers through a system known as “Possession Apparel.”
KEMURI has drawn attention for its striking supernatural style, cooperative gameplay, and the creative direction of Ikumi Nakamura, whose previous work has earned her a strong following among action game fans. As anticipation builds, many players will likely continue hoping for more platform announcements in the future.
Still, Nakamura’s message is difficult to dismiss. Bringing a game to another console is not as simple as pressing a button, especially for an independent studio with limited staff. While an Xbox version of KEMURI is not planned right now, the decision reflects a focus on responsible development rather than overextending a small team.
