Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo may have a practical answer to the crease problem
The iPhone Duo’s display crease may not be completely invisible, but Apple appears to have designed a clever way to make it less noticeable over time. According to Apple hardware engineering VP Kate Bergeron, the foldable iPhone uses a replaceable cover layer placed over the main display. Combined with a matte finish, this layer is intended to help the crease blend more naturally with the rest of the screen surface.
Apple has reportedly spent significant engineering effort making this top layer durable enough for everyday folding and unfolding. However, the most interesting part is that it is not meant to last forever. Instead, iPhone Duo owners will apparently be able to remove the worn layer and install a fresh one, helping the display regain a smoother look and feel.
AppleCare pricing already lists a “cover layer replacement” for $19, suggesting Apple plans to treat this part as a regular service item. It remains unclear how much the replacement will cost for users who do not have AppleCare coverage.
The matte coating also plays an important role in Apple’s foldable display strategy. Apple hardware engineering VP Tom Marieb previously explained that glossy screens tend to act like mirrors, making even small changes in the surface easier to notice. A matte finish reduces reflections, which can help disguise the subtle distortion caused by repeated folding.
This approach could set the iPhone Duo apart from earlier foldable phones. When the first Galaxy Fold reached early users, some mistook the top display layer for a removable screen protector. Removing it damaged the display, forcing Samsung to delay the device and redesign the protective layer so it was more clearly integrated into the phone. Modern foldables often include factory-installed protective films, but replacing them usually requires professional servicing.
Apple seems to be taking a different route by making the top layer a replaceable part from the start. If the process is simple and affordable, it could make long-term ownership of a foldable iPhone much more appealing.
The big question is whether a $19 replacement layer can truly keep the iPhone Duo display looking fresh after years of folding. Real-world use will be the final test. Still, Apple’s decision to make crease-related wear serviceable could be one of the smartest solutions yet to one of the biggest complaints about foldable smartphones.
