Apple is reportedly getting ready to introduce its next budget-friendly iPhone sooner than expected. A fresh report suggests the iPhone 17e, the successor to the iPhone 16e, will be officially revealed on Thursday, February 19. If Apple follows its usual rollout pattern, the phone could begin shipping just a few days after the announcement.
The current iPhone 16e starts at $599 for the 128GB model and is positioned as an entry-level iPhone. The iPhone 17e is expected to keep that same approachable strategy, offering a familiar iPhone experience at a lower price than Apple’s premium models—while still getting several meaningful upgrades.
Familiar 6.1-inch OLED display, likely unchanged
Rumors indicate the iPhone 17e will continue using a display that’s essentially the same as the one found in the iPhone 14. That means a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a 2532 x 1170 resolution, peak brightness up to 1,200 nits, and a 60Hz refresh rate. In other words, it should look sharp and bright, but it won’t chase higher refresh rates like some more expensive phones.
Five big upgrades rumored for iPhone 17e
While the screen may remain largely the same, the iPhone 17e is rumored to bring five notable improvements that could make it a much smarter buy for shoppers who want modern features without flagship pricing.
1) MagSafe support and faster wireless charging
One of the biggest rumored changes is MagSafe. If this happens, the iPhone 17e would work with magnetic accessories directly, without needing a special MagSafe-compatible case. It could also boost wireless charging speeds to up to 25W, a major jump from the 7.5W wireless charging associated with the iPhone 16e.
2) A newer A19 chip
The iPhone 17e is also expected to receive Apple’s newer A19 chipset, the same generation of processor used in the iPhone 17 lineup. That would likely translate into better overall speed, smoother performance, and longer-term software support value for buyers keeping their phone for years.
3) Potential design refresh: thinner bezels and Dynamic Island
Another rumored upgrade is a more modern front design, including thinner bezels and a Dynamic Island instead of the older, larger notch. However, reports on this point have been inconsistent, so it’s best viewed as a “possible” change rather than a sure thing.
4) Better connectivity: updated 5G modem and Wi‑Fi 7
Connectivity could be a major focus. The iPhone 17e is rumored to get upgrades to Apple’s in-house C1X 5G modem along with an N1 chip that supports Wi‑Fi 7. If accurate, users could see improved network efficiency and faster wireless performance on compatible routers and networks.
5) UWB support for more precise item tracking
Finally, Apple may add an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. UWB can enable more accurate, close-range location features, including more precise tracking for items like AirTags.
What this could mean for buyers
If these rumors hold true, the iPhone 17e could become a standout entry-level iPhone: a familiar 6.1-inch OLED device with meaningful real-world improvements like MagSafe, faster wireless charging, a newer chip, upgraded wireless tech, and potentially UWB. With an announcement reportedly set for February 19, anyone considering a value-focused iPhone may want to wait and see what Apple reveals.
