iOS 26.4 Could Bring Video Playback to CarPlay for Parked Drivers

Apple CarPlay could be on the verge of a major entertainment upgrade. According to clues found in the first iOS 26.4 beta, Apple appears to be preparing video playback support for CarPlay, potentially letting users watch content on their vehicle’s infotainment display using Apple TV and a small number of supported video apps.

The strongest hints come from references inside the iOS 26.4 beta itself. Code strings point to Apple TV becoming available within the CarPlay environment, along with additional mentions tied to video playback behavior and a templated TV-style app experience. In other words, Apple seems to be building a standardized way for video apps to appear and function on the CarPlay screen.

Apple has also previously indicated that video is on the roadmap for CarPlay. The company’s messaging around the feature focuses on AirPlay video in the car, describing a setup where people can stream video from an iPhone directly to the CarPlay display.

There’s an important limitation, and it’s the one most drivers will want to hear: video playback is expected to work only when the vehicle is parked. That means no watching videos while driving, which keeps the feature aligned with safety expectations and distracted-driving rules. Practically, this makes CarPlay video a “waiting mode” feature—useful during charging stops, parking breaks, or while waiting to pick someone up.

That parked-only rule also comes with a trade-off. If the system locks video whenever the car isn’t parked, it may be harder to use the front display as a “passenger entertainment screen” on longer trips, since the driver-facing infotainment unit is typically considered part of the driving interface.

Another key detail: availability may depend on automakers. Even if iOS 26.4 adds the capability, car manufacturers may need to enable support on their side, which can affect whether video playback arrives everywhere at the same time—or at all—depending on the vehicle brand, model, and infotainment system configuration.

For now, iOS 26.4 beta code suggests CarPlay video playback is getting close, with Apple TV support and a broader framework for compatible apps, but real-world rollout will likely hinge on Apple’s final iOS release and automaker adoption.
