Intel’s Latest AI Near-Miss: SambaNova Buyout Fizzles, Leaving a Xeon Partnership in Its Place

Intel was once rumored to be eyeing an acquisition of SambaNova Systems as a fast track to a stronger position in AI inference. Now, that strategy appears to have shifted. Instead of buying the company, Intel is moving forward with a partnership approach focused on Xeon-powered infrastructure and a combined inference offering that brings together technology from both sides.

The backdrop here matters. Despite being one of the world’s biggest compute providers, Intel has struggled to fully benefit from the ongoing AI boom. That challenge has lingered for multiple quarters, and even Intel leadership has previously acknowledged that the company hasn’t moved aggressively enough in AI. Passing on a potential SambaNova acquisition is being viewed as another sign that Intel is choosing a slower, more incremental route rather than making a bold, immediate play.

According to Intel’s own messaging, the company is aligning with SambaNova to deliver “Xeon-based” infrastructure and inference solutions that integrate Intel CPUs alongside SambaNova’s systems. Intel also emphasizes that this collaboration fits alongside its broader data center GPU strategy, and that it doesn’t change Intel’s longer-term goal of competing across the AI stack. In other words, Intel is positioning this as an additional path to capture AI workloads, not a replacement for its existing GPU roadmap.

So why is SambaNova important in the first place? The company’s pitch centers on specialized AI hardware designed for inference at scale. SambaNova uses what it calls a Reconfigurable Data Unit (RDU), an architecture designed to map entire neural network graphs directly into hardware. The goal is to make inference more efficient and cost-effective, especially as enterprise AI shifts toward “agentic” workflows that can demand heavy compute while needing predictable cost and latency.

SambaNova has also been pushing its newest hardware, the SN50 AI chip. The company claims significantly improved efficiency compared to GPUs for certain agentic AI workloads, including substantially lower costs and far more compute per accelerator than its previous generation. Whether those numbers translate broadly across every real-world deployment depends on workload specifics, but it highlights why inference-optimized silicon is becoming such a hot category: the inference market is expanding quickly, and many buyers want alternatives that can reduce operating costs.

While an acquisition may be off the table, SambaNova is still drawing major financial interest. The company is reported to be raising $350 million in a Series E funding round with backing that includes SoftBank and Intel Capital. Adding another interesting layer, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan is also described as an early SambaNova investor through Walden Capital, suggesting long-standing confidence in the company’s direction and its ability to ride the inference wave.

The most likely next step is deeper product integration rather than ownership. A practical scenario is Intel positioning SambaNova RDUs for targeted inference deployments while Intel supplies the broader platform around it, including Xeon processors, Intel GPUs, and supporting networking and storage. Intel has already signaled interest in building “heterogeneous” AI data centers, and this partnership fits that theme: mixing different processors and accelerators so each workload runs on the most suitable hardware.

Timing will be crucial. AI training infrastructure has dominated headlines, but inference is where many companies expect massive long-term spending as AI moves into everyday products and business processes. Intel can’t afford to fall behind again if inference becomes the next major battleground. If the partnership can turn into real, deployable solutions quickly, it could give Intel a more credible route into the fast-growing AI inference market without the risk and cost of a full acquisition.
