Intel’s Clearwater Forest Xeon CPU: A Sneak Peek at the Revolutionary 18A Chip

Intel is gearing up for an exciting comeback with its highly anticipated next-generation 18A process, which promises to renew its standing in the market and boost its reputation. While there’s plenty of buzz around Intel’s Lunar Lake SoCs, the real game-changer is poised to be the “Clearwater Forest” Xeon CPUs, uniquely crafted with the 18A process.

Over the past few years, Intel has faced hurdles, particularly with adoption and some setbacks in their foundry department linked to their older nodes. However, Intel’s Foundry Services (IFS) is now touting the advanced 18A process as a cornerstone for the company’s revival. Although several architectures will employ the 18A process, Clearwater Forest stands out as particularly significant. During an Enterprise Tech event in Portland, Oregon, Intel offered a glimpse of a Clearwater Forest chip. While specific details on specifications and core configuration were absent, past information indicates it may boast up to 288 cores based on the Darkmont Core architecture. Utilizing Foveros Direct and other advanced packaging technologies, this server CPU lineup is expected to be transformative for both Intel and the marketplace.

Clearwater Forest, aimed at the server market, incorporates advanced packaging capabilities like Foveros Direct. It has already achieved its initial power-on and is on track for a 2025 release. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger highlighted the importance of this milestone during the company’s Q2 earnings call, underscoring Clearwater Forest’s significance as the first Intel 18A server product featuring state-of-the-art hybrid bonding.

Examining the Clearwater Forest “Xeon” CPU package reveals a sophisticated stacked PCB design compatible with LGA 7529 sockets. The chip features three compute tiles, each with 96 E-Cores, and two IO tiles on the periphery. This massive chip is expected to deliver exceptional performance in the cloud data center segment, positioning Intel as a formidable competitor once again.
