Intel’s 18A Process Faces Challenges with Yield Rates Stuck at 20%-30%, Hindering Mass Production Efforts

Intel is currently encountering significant challenges in achieving mass production of their 18A semiconductor process, with yield rates reported at a mere 20%-30%. This is a concerning obstacle for the company, which has been positioning itself optimistically with support from the previous Trump administration, amidst bullish forecasts for Intel Foundry.

Renowned industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Intel’s 18A process is struggling when it comes to integration with mainstream consumer products, as indicated by the industry’s feedback. Major PC original design and equipment manufacturers are testing the first engineering samples of Panther Lake chips, made using this 18A technology. Unfortunately, these early test results reveal yield rates below 30%, reflecting that Intel has considerable progress to make before mass production becomes viable.

In previous updates, Intel had shown some improvement in these figures, which were initially reported at around 10% a few months ago. However, despite this improvement, the numbers are still significantly below the threshold needed for mass production. This casts doubt over Intel’s H2 2025 timeline for full-scale production.
