Modular computing, although not yet mainstream, offers a tantalizing glimpse into a future where users can effortlessly swap and upgrade components without the typical hassle. Intel seems to be embracing this concept at their “Innovation Showcase,” a private event that hinted at exciting possibilities to come.
Imagery leaked from the event showed a sleek, metallic handheld device with swappable screens, a vision straight from the future. This handheld gadget features a 7-inch Full HD screen, with the potential for alternate screen configurations. While some of this remains speculative, it sparks the imagination of what modular technology could offer.
The tech world has seen some modular devices like the AYANEO 3, which allowed for swapping out controller designs. Yet, a fully customizable handheld or laptop configuration is still uncharted territory. Intel’s showcase didn’t stop at handhelds; it also included a “Lunar Lake” modular laptop concept. This design revisits Intel’s previous efforts, such as the “Compute Card”—a card-sized computing module containing crucial PC components.

Although these remarkable modular devices fall under the enigmatic “AI8A” brand, they remain shrouded in mystery with no indication of when or if they will hit the market.
