Intel has offered a glimpse into the future of its Xeon processor lineup with exciting details on its forthcoming Sierra Forest CPUs and the announcement of the Granite Rapids-D series set for a 2025 release.
During this year’s Mobile World Congress, Intel showcased its upcoming Sierra Forest Xeon CPUs, slated for release later in the year. This next-generation processor lineup is said to boast up to 288 efficiency cores (E-cores) in a single chip. Specifically tailored for 5G core workloads, the Sierra Forest chips are expected to offer up to a 2.7x increase in performance per rack while emphasizing superior energy efficiency.
In addition to Sierra Forest, Intel is gearing up for a significant foray into the virtual radio access network (vRAN), artificial intelligence (AI), and edge computing sectors. The tech giant has announced that it will be launching its Granite Rapids-D Xeon processor family in 2025. While specific details about the Granite Rapids-D processors remain scarce, Intel has revealed that they will feature “Intel AVX for vRAN and integrated Intel vRAN Boost acceleration.”
Advancing its innovations, Intel stated that sample silicon for the next-generation CPUs is already in the testing phase, involving collaborations with major companies like Samsung and Ericsson for manufacturing in South Korea and California.
Intel’s commitment to the vRAN market’s growth is further underlined by its early deployment of Intel vRAN AI Development Kits to select industry partners, including telecom giants such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom, and Vodafone. These kits have been designed to assist in building and training AI models optimized for vRAN applications on networks.
The announcements from Intel signal a continued dedication to advancing the state of server CPUs, fostering new growth in connectivity and computational efficiency, and positioning itself at the forefront of high-performance computing solutions for the modern age. As the tech community anticipates the official launch of the Sierra Forest Xeon CPUs and the eventual introduction of the Granite Rapids-D series, Intel’s roadmap points towards exciting times ahead in the realm of enterprise and network computing.
