Instagram Challenges Snapchat with Innovative ‘Instagram Map’ Feature

Instagram is introducing Instagram Map, a fresh feature designed to let users share their latest active location and discover location-based content. Alongside this, Instagram is rolling out reposts and expanding the “Friends” tab in Reels worldwide.

Instagram Map is reminiscent of another feature, Snap Map, which has garnered over 400 million monthly active users. With Instagram’s map, location sharing is switched off by default and updates only when the app is opened, contrasting with Snap Map’s option for real-time updates.

Instagram also offers real-time location sharing via direct messages. However, unlike some other location-sharing services, this feature on Instagram is temporary, with a maximum duration of one hour.

The new map feature aims to simplify meeting up with friends and exploring content shared by others. For instance, if a friend posts a story while at a local music festival, it will show up on the map. Users can also discover posts and reels about nearby hotspots shared by creators.

Instagram Notes, previously seen at the top of direct messages, will now be available on the map, allowing users to leave brief messages for others to view.

This move might attract fans of Zenly, a social map app that was acquired and later shut down by Snap in 2023. Instagram Map is debuting in the United States, with plans for broader global access. Users can access it through their DM inbox.

Additionally, Instagram is adopting features similar to TikTok’s reposts and Twitter’s retweets with its new “Reposts.” Users can share public reels and feed posts, which will appear in their friends’ feeds and a new “Reposts” tab on profiles. This function is designed to help users share their interests and enable creators to reach larger audiences.

Reposting is simple: tap the repost icon and add a note if desired, then save.

Lastly, Instagram’s “Friends” tab in Reels, initially launched in the US, is now available globally. It displays public reels that friends have liked, commented on, or reposted. For those who prefer privacy, Instagram now allows users to opt out of having their interactions shown in this tab. There are options to hide likes, comments, and reposts, or mute interactions from specific followers.
