Ever thought about taking your CPU cooling to the next level without breaking the bank? A daring modder recently embarked on a creative DIY project to build a CPU waterblock from scratch, and the process is nothing short of intriguing.
This bold endeavor involved transforming a CPU’s Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) into a custom water-cooling block. Using CNC machinery, the modder meticulously carved cooling channels directly onto the IHS. This approach resembles direct-die cooling, with the carved pathways allowing for heat dissipation akin to traditional cooling blocks. To complete the setup, the modder cleverly added fittings for water pipes, crafting a miniature version of the usual CPU cooling block.
What’s truly unique about this project is the modder’s choice of coolant reservoir—a simple plastic bucket. Yes, you read that right. They opted for a bucket to manage the coolant, discharging it into a separate bottle after some time. While this setup might not be practical for everyday use, it certainly serves as an exciting experiment for those willing to try something out of the ordinary.
In terms of performance, the setup was tested on a Core i9-14900KS processor. While it did manage to achieve some cooling, there were significant temperature fluctuations.
