Huawei’s Ascend 910D Chip Challenges NVIDIA’s Dominance in China’s AI Scene

Huawei’s new Ascend 910D AI chip is making waves in the technology sector as the company gears up to outshine NVIDIA in China’s AI industry. Currently in the sampling stages, Huawei plans to distribute these cutting-edge chips to partners by the end of next month.

The shift is noteworthy, especially with NVIDIA facing new export restrictions in China, allowing Huawei to step in with its advanced AI solutions. According to reports, the Ascend 910D AI chip is said to outperform NVIDIA’s popular Hopper generation H100 AI accelerators, once the industry favorite. Although precise details remain scarce, the chip’s potential has already sparked interest.

Previously, Huawei’s Ascend 910C chip aimed to compete with the H100 but matched more closely with NVIDIA’s H20 AI GPU. This achievement still marks a significant milestone in the AI landscape.

Huawei’s ambitions extend beyond individual AI GPUs. The tech giant is developing robust AI clusters like the CloudMatrix 384, which incorporates Ascend AI chips. This cluster promises performance on par with NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 “Blackwell” AI server by emphasizing raw power.

However, Huawei faces challenges with a limited supply chain, relying on SMIC and TSMC for chips procured before export restrictions took effect. This constraint limits their ability to fully meet demand. Additionally, Huawei resorts to older technologies like HBM2, pushing the company to explore alternative methods to enhance power while side-stepping efficiency figures.
