Makera Z1 CNC Machine Opens for Pre-Order With Optional Laser Module and Beginner-Friendly Ambitions
The Makera Z1 is now available for pre-order, bringing a compact CNC machine to makers, hobbyists, small workshops, and beginners who want a more accessible way to cut, mill, and shape materials at home or in a studio. With a starting price of $1,099, the machine is positioned as an affordable entry point into CNC machining while still offering features aimed at more serious creative and engineering projects.
Pre-orders are open now, with deliveries expected to begin in July. Customers who place an order by June 30 are also set to receive a few bonus items. However, the $1,099 starting price applies to the base model, not the Pro version. Add-ons such as the laser module and dust extraction system are available separately for an extra cost.
The Makera Z1 is designed to make CNC machining less intimidating for newcomers. One of the key parts of that plan is Makera Studio, a software platform intended to simplify machine control and project setup. At the moment, the software is still in closed beta, which means users may currently need separate CAM and controller software to operate the machine. Once Makera Studio is fully available, it could become one of the Z1’s most important features, especially for beginners who may not be familiar with traditional CNC workflows.
Makera is also planning to support the machine with Makerables, a project-sharing platform where creators can upload, download, and collaborate on digital design files. This could make the Z1 more approachable for users who want ready-to-cut templates or inspiration for new projects.
In terms of hardware, the Makera Z1 offers a working area of 200 x 200 x 100 mm. That makes it suitable for smaller parts, prototypes, decorative pieces, custom components, and maker projects. An optional rotary axis will also be available, allowing users to work on cylindrical objects and expand the types of items they can create.
The machine is equipped with a 150-watt spindle capable of reaching up to 13,000 RPM. According to Makera, the Z1 can handle materials including plastic, carbon fiber, wood, and aluminum. The optional laser module adds even more flexibility, potentially allowing users to engrave or cut compatible materials without needing a separate laser cutter.
Compared with a 3D printer, a CNC machine like the Makera Z1 works in a very different way. A 3D printer builds objects layer by layer using filament or resin, while a CNC machine removes material from a solid block or sheet. This subtractive process can produce strong, precise parts that may be better suited for mechanical use, especially when working with wood, plastic, or metal.
The trade-off is material waste. Because CNC machining cuts away from a larger piece of material, it can generate more scrap than 3D printing. This is especially true when milling metal or using semi-finished stock that is much larger than the final part. Consumable costs may also be higher, since users need cutting tools, raw material, and possibly dust collection or safety accessories depending on the project.
Still, CNC machining has major advantages. It can create durable components, accurate fittings, clean edges, and parts with properties that are difficult to achieve through basic desktop 3D printing. It also offers more freedom than laser cutting when projects require depth, pockets, contours, or shaped surfaces rather than flat cuts.
The Makera Z1 appears to be aimed at users who want a compact desktop CNC machine without stepping into the price range of industrial equipment. Its combination of milling capability, optional laser engraving, rotary-axis support, and upcoming beginner-focused software could make it an appealing option for makers who want to move beyond 3D printing or laser cutting.
For now, the biggest question is how well the complete software experience will work once Makera Studio becomes widely available. Since ease of use is a major part of the Z1’s appeal, the final software could determine whether the machine truly succeeds as a beginner-friendly CNC solution.
With pre-orders now live, a July shipping target, and a base price of $1,099, the Makera Z1 is shaping up to be an interesting new option in the desktop CNC market.
