The AMD Radeon 780M integrated GPU (iGPU), with its remarkable capabilities, has recently been put to the test through overclocking, revealing significant performance enhancements. Initially, the performance of the Radeon 780M iGPU was noted to surpass that of Nvidia’s GTX 1650 Max-Q, a discrete GPU, during benchmarks. With the release of the AMD Ryzen 8000G series, which incorporates the 780M for desktops, the potential for overclocking has become a striking reality.
The exploration into overclocking was initiated by examining the Ryzen 8700G APU at its default settings, where the Radeon 780M clocked in at 2881 MHz, consuming up to 49.8W at its peak. The first modifications involved enabling XMP and Precision Boost 2 (PBO 2) modes, which nudged the clock speed slightly higher to 2903 MHz and peak power to 68.5W, yielding a 26.3% performance increase.
Further adjustments pushed the boundaries even more. By manually tweaking PBO 2 to attain a higher chip voltage, the clock speed of the iGPU leaped to 3053 MHz, with power consumption hitting 159W during a stress test, which amounted to a 28.9% performance uplift from stock settings.
The next level of overclocking involved manual adjustments of various parameters including GFXCLK, MCLX, FCLK, and UCLK, and achieved a 3086 MHz peak GPU clock with a 155.6W power draw in stress testing. This technique led to a performance boost of 39.09%.
The most striking performance boost occurred when DDR5 memory modules were set to 7800 MT/s with adjusted timings, alongside tweaks to both the CPU and iGPU settings. This delivered a significant performance gain of 61.4%, averaging a 37.75% improvement over the standard configuration.
Although such overclocking shows tremendous performance potential, it should be noted that the final overclocking configuration was not deemed stable and resulted in artifacts, therefore it wasn’t subjected to stress tests.
