The U.S. trade sanctions have placed Huawei and other Chinese companies in a challenging situation. Once reliant on TSMC’s 7nm technology, these firms now grapple with restricted access and are forced to explore alternative solutions. With China’s leading semiconductor manufacturer, SMIC, stepping in to meet demand, problems like low yield rates persist, affecting its clientele, including Huawei.
A flicker of hope seems to come from reports suggesting a potential rekindling of Huawei’s business relationships with Korean companies. The sanctions have not only impacted Chinese entities but have also placed Korean firms in a difficult financial position, creating an opportunity for mutual benefit were cooperation to resume.
An anonymous official mentioned to Korean media that prior to these sanctions, Huawei had a significant partnership with Korean semiconductor giants like Samsung and SK hynix, purchasing approximately $10 billion worth of chips annually. This robust collaboration has since ceased, bringing about financial losses for both sides.
Despite background discussions, a tangible partnership materializing between Huawei and these Korean companies seems unlikely, largely due to the constraints implemented by the previous U.S. administration. While a Huawei spokesperson refrained from speculating on future policies, the initial sanction impacts were admitted to complicating matters significantly.
Huawei’s strategy to navigate these hurdles includes working with SMIC to develop a 5nm process, although this progress is hampered by older DUV equipment resulting in limited production yields. Additionally, the company has sought out talent by offering lucrative incentives to TSMC engineers to join their ranks.
The relationship dynamics between Huawei and Korean semiconductor firms remain complex, influenced by U.S. regulations. However, observing the unfolding strategies and resilience of these companies in overcoming manufacturing challenges provides an intriguing glimpse into the global semiconductor industry.
