HP ZBook Ultra G3a launches as a 16-inch mobile workstation with up to 192GB RAM
HP is raising the bar for high-performance workstation laptops with the new ZBook Ultra G3a, a 16-inch machine built for creators, engineers, AI developers, and power users who need desktop-class performance in a portable design. The biggest headline is impossible to miss: this laptop can be configured with up to 192GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory, making it one of the most memory-heavy mobile workstations in its class.
At the center of the HP ZBook Ultra G3a is AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 processor, part of the company’s powerful Gorgon Halo family. This chip features 16 full Zen 5 CPU cores, giving the laptop serious multi-threaded performance for demanding workloads such as 3D rendering, code compilation, video production, CAD, simulation, and AI development.
Compared with the previous Strix Halo-based designs, the newer Gorgon Halo platform is expected to deliver a modest performance lift thanks to slightly higher boost clocks. Early performance signs suggest around a 5% gain over the prior generation, which may not sound huge on paper, but it could still matter in heavy professional workflows where every bit of speed counts.
Graphics performance is another major part of the story. The Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 includes the Radeon 8065S integrated GPU, based on RDNA 3.5 architecture with a 40-compute-unit configuration. While it remains an integrated graphics solution, it is far from ordinary. Its predecessor was already strong enough to compete with some dedicated laptop GPUs in select workloads, and the higher clock speeds on the Radeon 8065S should help the new ZBook Ultra G3a deliver impressive graphics performance without relying on a separate discrete GPU.
One of the most interesting advantages of this design is memory access. The integrated GPU can reportedly tap into up to 160GB of the system memory, which could make the ZBook Ultra G3a especially appealing for running large AI models locally. For developers working with large language models, generative AI tools, advanced data sets, or GPU-accelerated professional software, that shared memory pool could be a major selling point.
Storage is equally ambitious. HP will offer configurations with up to 8TB of storage, giving users plenty of space for large project files, datasets, 4K and 8K video footage, design assets, virtual machines, and professional software environments.
The display options also make the ZBook Ultra G3a look like a serious workstation for visual work. Buyers will be able to choose a 16-inch 2.8K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 500 nits of peak brightness. For those who need higher resolution, HP will also offer a 4K 120Hz display option. A more practical FHD panel rated at 400 nits with low blue light output will be available as well, likely targeting business users who prioritize battery life and comfort over maximum resolution.
Connectivity is another strong point. The HP ZBook Ultra G3a includes dual Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 2.1 support, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 2.1, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, a nano SIM slot, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack. For a slim workstation, that is a useful mix of modern and practical ports, especially for professionals who regularly connect external displays, storage devices, card readers, and docking stations.
HP has also equipped the laptop with a vapor chamber cooling system, which should help control temperatures under sustained workloads. That will be important given the powerful AMD processor and high-end integrated graphics inside such a compact chassis.
The ZBook Ultra G3a also includes a 55 TOPS XDNA 2 NPU for AI acceleration, ISV certifications for professional software reliability, optional 5G connectivity, and a swappable keyboard. The chassis measures 17.9mm thick and weighs around 4.2 pounds, or roughly 1.9 kilograms, making it relatively portable for a workstation with this level of hardware.
Pricing has not been announced yet, but this laptop is unlikely to be cheap. With high-end AMD silicon, OLED and 4K display options, up to 192GB of fast LPDDR5X memory, and up to 8TB of storage, the ZBook Ultra G3a is clearly aimed at premium professional buyers rather than casual users. Rising memory and storage costs could also push fully loaded configurations into a very expensive range.
HP says the ZBook Ultra G3a is expected to become available next month. For professionals who need a powerful 16-inch workstation laptop for AI, creative production, engineering, and advanced multitasking, this could be one of the most compelling AMD-powered mobile workstations of the year.
