HP EliteBook 865 G10: A Missed Opportunity for Innovation?

When it comes to updating and invigorating a laptop series, HP’s Spectre x360 16 has set a benchmark by integrating Core Ultra processors effectively. However, the HP EliteBook series seems to have missed the mark in this department, lacking significant updates beyond a processor swap, unlike its HP Spectre series counterpart.

The new EliteBook 865 G10 boasts a shift from its predecessor’s AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U to the newer Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS, which appears to be the extent of its improvements. Despite the upgrade, lingering issues such as the sluggish single-channel RAM persist. The device still underperforms due to the limitations this memory configuration poses on application and integrated AMD Radeon 780M’s 3D performance. It’s important to note that while the laptop can be set up with dual-channel memory, many units, including our review sample, stagnate with the single-channel setup.

Similarly, the notorious Sure View privacy filter has not been reworked. In its current state, it makes the screen excessively dark—even for the user directly in front of it—diminishing the overall viewing experience. The display features like brightness distribution fare poorly, with our review stating a subpar 47%. Although alternative displays are available without the Sure View feature and offer up to 400 nits of brightness, the question remains why there isn’t an option for a 1000-nit display devoid of the privacy filter.

It’s evident that the EliteBook’s top-tier business range would benefit from more substantial enhancements than a solitary processor update. Upon reviewing the device, we were left contemplating what might have been had the laptop been configured with dual-channel RAM and a brighter, non-Sure View display.

Despite these drawbacks, the EliteBook 865 G10 isn’t without its merits. A comprehensive review will reveal its strengths and provide insights on how potential users can navigate around these shortcomings to experience the best the EliteBook has to offer.
