Hit Post-Apocalyptic Survival Game Goes Free on PS5 and Xbox

Once Human, the free-to-play post-apocalyptic survival game from NetEase Games and Starry Studio, has officially arrived on consoles after building its audience on PC and mobile. The open-world multiplayer title is now available on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S, giving console players a new way to explore its strange, dangerous world without needing a paid online subscription.

Set in a ruined world transformed by a mysterious substance known as Stardust, Once Human blends survival gameplay with supernatural horror and open-world exploration. Players must scavenge resources, craft gear, build bases, fight hostile creatures, and uncover the secrets behind the disaster that changed civilization. Its mix of third-person action, base construction, multiplayer cooperation, and eerie anomaly encounters gives it a distinct identity among modern survival games.

The console release is not just a basic port. One of the biggest additions is a new first-person perspective, allowing players to switch between first-person and third-person views depending on how they want to explore, fight, or build. This feature gives the game a more immersive feel on console while still keeping the original third-person experience intact.

Once Human also supports cross-play and cross-progression across supported platforms. That means players on console, PC, and mobile can team up together, while also carrying their progress between platforms. For a large-scale survival game built around long-term progression, shared worlds, and cooperative play, this is a major advantage for players who do not want to be locked to one device.

At launch, console players can jump into multiple scenarios and access more than 300 hours of content. These scenarios offer different survival challenges, enemies, objectives, and world conditions, giving players plenty to do whether they prefer solo exploration or teaming up with friends. From gathering materials and upgrading weapons to defending bases and battling supernatural threats, the game is designed to keep players invested over the long term.

PS5 players also get features built around the DualSense controller, adding extra feedback and immersion during gameplay. Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass members can claim additional in-game bonuses, though the game itself remains free to access on Xbox Series X|S.

One of the most appealing parts of Once Human’s console launch is that it does not require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core to play. Anyone with a supported console can download and start playing for free. This makes it an accessible option for survival game fans looking for a new online multiplayer experience without an upfront cost.

Early player reception appears positive, with the game earning a strong user rating on the PlayStation Store shortly after launch. The developers have also emphasized that paid purchases are focused on cosmetics, Battle Passes, and optional content that does not impact gameplay balance or competitive fairness.

PlayStation Plus members can also claim a limited-time gift pack, giving subscribers extra rewards as they begin their journey through the Stardust-infested world.

Once Human is currently available across several major regions, including North America, South America, Europe, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. With its free-to-play model, cross-platform support, large amount of launch content, and mix of survival, shooting, crafting, and supernatural mystery, Once Human could become a strong choice for console players looking for their next open-world multiplayer game.
