Hanmi Semiconductor Wins Rare Samsung Equipment Order Worth $18.3 Million
Hanmi Semiconductor has landed a notable equipment supply deal with Samsung Electro-Mechanics, marking a rare business win involving a Samsung Group affiliate after years of limited cooperation between the companies.
The South Korean semiconductor equipment maker announced that it secured a KRW 24.48 billion order, equal to roughly US$18.3 million, from Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The deal centers on Hanmi Semiconductor’s micro SAW and Vision Placement equipment, which is used in advanced semiconductor packaging processes.
While the value of the order is significant on its own, the bigger story is the customer. Samsung-related contracts have been uncommon for Hanmi Semiconductor in recent years, largely due to past tensions following a patent dispute. That background makes this new agreement stand out as a potentially important turning point for the company.
Hanmi Semiconductor’s micro SAW and Vision Placement systems play a key role in chip packaging, an area that has become increasingly important as the semiconductor industry pushes for more compact, powerful, and efficient components. As demand grows for high-performance chips used in artificial intelligence, servers, mobile devices, and automotive electronics, packaging technology has become just as critical as chip manufacturing itself.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is a major player in electronic components and semiconductor-related materials, including package substrates. By placing this order, the company appears to be strengthening its production capabilities at a time when the global chip supply chain is focused on advanced packaging, miniaturization, and higher performance.
For Hanmi Semiconductor, the deal could help reinforce its position in the semiconductor equipment market. The company has built a reputation in chip packaging equipment, and a supply agreement with a Samsung affiliate may improve market confidence in its technology and execution.
The timing is also important. Semiconductor companies around the world are increasing investments in next-generation packaging solutions as traditional chip scaling becomes more complex and expensive. Equipment makers that can support precision cutting, placement, and packaging processes are expected to benefit from this industry shift.
Although the order does not necessarily mean a full revival of large-scale cooperation between Hanmi Semiconductor and Samsung Group companies, it does suggest that business ties may be improving. If the equipment performs well and demand continues to rise, the deal could open the door to further opportunities.
The agreement also highlights South Korea’s strength in the semiconductor supply chain. Alongside major chipmakers and component suppliers, domestic equipment manufacturers such as Hanmi Semiconductor are playing a growing role in supporting advanced chip production and packaging.
Investors and industry watchers will likely keep a close eye on whether this contract leads to follow-up orders. In the semiconductor equipment business, winning a high-profile customer can be a powerful signal, especially when the customer is connected to one of the world’s largest electronics groups.
For now, Hanmi Semiconductor’s KRW 24.48 billion order from Samsung Electro-Mechanics represents more than a single equipment sale. It is a rare and meaningful win that reflects the rising importance of advanced semiconductor packaging and could strengthen Hanmi’s position in a fast-changing chip industry.
