GTA 6 Wildlife Revealed: Wild Monkeys, Alligators, Manatees, and Over 170 Animal Species Coming to Leonida
Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to have one of the most detailed open worlds Rockstar Games has ever created, and its wildlife may be a major part of that experience. The upcoming game will feature more than 170 animal species across Leonida, the Florida-inspired state where the story takes place. Among the most surprising additions are wild rhesus macaques, a species of monkey with a real-world connection to Florida’s history.
Rockstar has confirmed that rhesus macaques will appear in GTA 6 as part of Leonida’s invasive wildlife. They will be joined by other invasive species such as green iguanas, cane toads, and feral cats. Native animals will also play a major role in bringing the game world to life, with flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators, fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals all roaming different environments.
The inclusion of wild monkeys may sound unusual, but it is rooted in reality. Florida has had a wild rhesus macaque population since the 1930s. The population traces back to a small group of monkeys released near what is now Silver Springs State Park as a way to attract visitors to boat tours. Over time, the monkeys adapted to the area and became part of Florida’s unique wildlife story. GTA 6 appears to be drawing from that strange real-life detail to make Leonida feel more authentic.
The game’s animal roster is expected to include around 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals, along with aquatic creatures and reptiles. This makes GTA 6 one of Rockstar’s most ambitious wildlife projects so far. For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 featured roughly 200 animal species when it launched, and GTA 6 seems to be bringing a similar level of attention to a modern urban and coastal setting.
Rockstar is also using advanced animal technology carried over and expanded from the Red Dead Redemption series. New hair and fur systems will help animals look more realistic, with improved coats, pelts, and textures. The game will also support visual effects such as iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, and different feather types, giving birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals more lifelike detail.
Wildlife in GTA 6 will not just be background decoration. Players will be able to track certain animals, including species categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary. Rockstar has not yet revealed which animals will fall into those categories, but the feature suggests exploration and observation will be a bigger part of the game than many fans expected.
Other wildlife-related features include a zoo, dogs that players can pet, and an in-game species list that fills in as players discover and observe new animals. This could encourage players to explore Leonida’s swamps, beaches, forests, wetlands, cities, and rural regions in search of new creatures.
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut has described Leonida as the largest world Rockstar has built “by some degree.” The game world will reportedly include six major map regions, each with its own atmosphere and environmental identity. GTA 6 will also feature localized weather systems, including hurricanes, which could make the world feel even more dynamic and unpredictable.
With its massive animal roster, advanced wildlife systems, and Florida-inspired setting, GTA 6 looks set to deliver a living, breathing open world filled with detail. From alligators in the wetlands to monkeys in the wild, Leonida may become one of the most immersive environments ever seen in a Grand Theft Auto game.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.
