GTA 6 Leak Hints at Performance Mode Targeting 40–60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox

GTA 6 leaks suggest Rockstar may have tested a performance mode for higher frame rates

Grand Theft Auto 6 is already one of the most anticipated games of the decade, but one question continues to dominate discussions among players: will GTA 6 run above 30 fps on consoles?

Recent leaks from earlier development builds have fueled hope that Rockstar Games may have experimented with both fidelity and performance modes for GTA 6. While nothing is confirmed for launch, the findings suggest the studio may have explored options beyond a standard 30 fps presentation on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.

The discussion intensified after comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson appeared to suggest that the console versions of GTA 6 could target 30 fps at release. For many players, that was disappointing, especially after years of current-gen games offering 60 fps performance modes. However, older development material now being analyzed by fans points to the possibility that Rockstar once had more ambitious performance targets in mind.

One leak reportedly shows graphical debugging data from an Xbox development build. Although the image quality is difficult to read, fans claim it references a fidelity mode with a resolution range between 1440p and 2160p. That would line up with the idea that Rockstar is prioritizing high visual quality, dense environments, and a cinematic presentation for Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Another older clip, allegedly connected to an early GTA 6 build, is believed by some fans to include signs of a performance mode. If accurate, this mode may have been designed to push the frame rate beyond 30 fps, possibly toward 40 fps or even 60 fps under certain conditions.

That does not mean GTA 6 will launch with a high-frame-rate option. Development builds often contain experimental settings that are later removed, changed, or held back depending on technical limitations. Rockstar is known for pushing hardware hard, and GTA 6 appears to be one of the most demanding open-world games ever built for consoles.

The challenge is easy to understand. GTA 6 is expected to feature a massive open world with detailed city streets, complex traffic systems, advanced NPC behavior, realistic lighting, and heavy environmental density. Vice City is not just a pretty backdrop; it appears to be packed with activity, which can place major stress on console CPUs and GPUs.

Some trailer analysis has suggested that the footage shown so far may be running at 30 fps with a native resolution around 1440p before being upscaled to 4K. If that is accurate, Rockstar may be using every available resource to deliver the game’s impressive visual detail rather than prioritizing smoother frame rates on base consoles.

The PS5 Pro could have the best chance of offering improved GTA 6 performance. Its stronger GPU and advanced upscaling technology may help deliver sharper visuals or more stable frame rates compared to the base PS5. However, even the PS5 Pro may not guarantee a true 60 fps mode if the game is heavily limited by CPU-intensive simulation systems, crowd behavior, and world complexity.

For Xbox Series X and standard PS5 owners, expectations should remain cautious. A 30 fps fidelity mode may be the most realistic launch target, especially if Rockstar wants GTA 6 to maintain consistent visual quality across dense urban areas, vehicle chases, weather effects, and large crowds.

Still, the existence of references to fidelity and performance presets in older builds is encouraging. It suggests Rockstar has at least considered giving players more options. Whether those options survive into the final release will depend on how much optimization the studio can achieve before launch.

With review copies reportedly circulating, more information about GTA 6 performance may surface soon, though strict watermarking and security measures could make leaks harder to verify. Until Rockstar officially confirms the available graphics modes, all claims about 40 fps or 60 fps should be treated as speculation.

For now, GTA 6 fans should expect a visually ambitious console release, likely focused on cinematic quality and world detail. A performance mode remains possible, especially on PS5 Pro, but players hoping for guaranteed 60 fps on day one may need to wait for official details from Rockstar.
