GTA 6 Could Hit 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Thanks to Reported Performance Patch

GTA 6 60 FPS Console Performance Rumor Gives PS5 and Xbox Series X Players New Hope

Grand Theft Auto 6 may be targeting more than just a 30 frames-per-second experience on current-generation consoles, according to a new performance rumor circulating among gaming hardware watchers. While Rockstar Games has not confirmed a 60 FPS mode for GTA 6 on PS5, Xbox Series X, or PS5 Pro, recent comments and insider claims suggest the studio may still be exploring ways to deliver smoother gameplay after launch.

Following the latest extended look at GTA 6, Rockstar North development lead Rob Nelson indicated that the game is currently running at 30 FPS. That immediately sparked debate among fans, especially those hoping that the long-awaited open-world title would offer a higher frame-rate option on modern consoles.

For a game as visually ambitious as GTA 6, 30 FPS would not be surprising. The footage shown so far highlights dense city streets, detailed character models, heavy traffic, advanced lighting, and a massive Vice City-inspired world filled with activity. All of that puts major pressure on console hardware, particularly the CPU, which has to handle AI, physics, pedestrians, vehicles, and background systems across the open world.

Even so, the possibility of a future GTA 6 performance patch has not been ruled out.

A recent discussion from the Moore’s Law Is Dead channel pointed to earlier claims from a Polish gaming podcast suggesting that Rockstar developers had been aiming for two graphics modes on current-generation consoles. According to that rumor, GTA 6 could include both a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The claim remains unconfirmed, and players should treat it cautiously. However, it has given fans some hope that Rockstar may be trying to optimize the game beyond the 30 FPS target currently associated with the footage shown publicly.

The biggest question is whether the base PS5 and Xbox Series X can realistically run GTA 6 at 60 FPS without major visual compromises. Open-world games of this scale are often limited less by graphics power and more by CPU performance. GTA 6 appears to feature an extremely busy city environment, with large crowds, heavy traffic, and complex simulation systems. Those elements can make doubling the frame rate from 30 FPS to 60 FPS very difficult.

Still, there are several ways Rockstar could potentially improve performance. The final version of GTA 6 may use adjusted ray tracing, reduced crowd density in performance mode, lower internal resolution, dynamic scaling, or other visual trade-offs to increase frame rates. Rockstar has a long history of optimizing large open-world games across multiple platforms, so a post-launch update designed to improve console performance would not be impossible.

The PS5 Pro may have a better chance of offering a smoother GTA 6 experience. Its stronger GPU could allow Rockstar to push higher frame rates or improved visual settings compared with the base PS5. However, because the CPU improvement is more limited, the console may still face challenges in heavily populated areas of the game world.

Some fans were hoping that the GTA 6 PS5 Pro version would deliver at least a 40 FPS mode, especially for displays that support 120Hz output. A 40 FPS option can feel noticeably smoother than 30 FPS while being easier to achieve than a full 60 FPS. If Rockstar cannot reach 60 FPS on consoles, a 40 FPS mode could be a realistic middle ground for players who want better responsiveness without sacrificing too much visual quality.

The uncertainty has left some gamers debating whether to pre-order GTA 6 now or wait for a future PC version or next-generation console release. A PC port would likely offer the most flexibility, with higher frame rates depending on hardware. However, Rockstar has not announced a PC release date, and historically, the company’s biggest titles have often arrived on PC after the console versions.

For now, the safest expectation is that GTA 6 will launch with a 30 FPS target on current-generation consoles. Anything beyond that, including a 60 FPS performance mode or a later optimization patch, remains speculation until Rockstar makes an official announcement.

Even with that uncertainty, the possibility of a GTA 6 60 FPS update is enough to keep performance-focused players interested. If Rockstar can balance its ambitious visuals with smoother gameplay, GTA 6 could become one of the most technically impressive console releases of the generation.
