Grand Seiko Reimagines a 2001 Icon with the Limited-Edition SBGW325 Mechanical Watch

Grand Seiko SBGW325 Debuts as a 600-Piece Limited Edition With Indigo-Inspired Elegance

Grand Seiko has introduced the SBGW325, a refined limited-edition mechanical watch that blends Japanese design heritage with traditional craftsmanship. Limited to just 600 pieces worldwide, the new model is scheduled to arrive in October and will be available through Grand Seiko Boutiques. In the UK, the watch is priced at £5,000 including VAT.

The Grand Seiko SBGW325 takes inspiration from the SBGW003 released in 2001, an important model in the brand’s modern history. That earlier watch was the first Grand Seiko to feature a manually wound 9S movement, the 9S54. Its distinctive Arabic numerals were created by Nobuhiro Kosugi, who was leading Grand Seiko’s design division at the time. The numerals were carefully shaped to harmonize with the Grand Seiko logo, giving the watch a unique visual identity.

For the SBGW325, Grand Seiko revisits that classic design language while giving it a rich new personality. The deep navy dial is inspired by Japan’s long tradition of indigo dyeing, giving the watch a calm, elegant, and distinctly Japanese character. Raised indexes add depth to the dial, while the dot minute track and sharp dauphine hands preserve the clean vintage-inspired look.

The indigo theme continues with the strap. Grand Seiko pairs the watch with a crocodile leather strap that is hand-dyed using hon-ai, a natural indigo dyeing method. This traditional process is carried out by artisans and is described by the brand as slow and deliberate, emphasizing the handcrafted nature of the piece. Owners can also choose from 11 additional strap color options to personalize the watch’s appearance.

The stainless steel case measures 37.3 mm in diameter, 44.3 mm lug to lug, and 11.7 mm thick, making it a compact and wearable option for collectors who appreciate classic proportions. The watch weighs 61 g, helping it maintain a light and comfortable feel on the wrist.

Grand Seiko has paid particular attention to the lugs, which widen toward the tips and feature the brand’s signature distortion-free mirror finish created through Zaratsu polishing. This finishing technique is one of Grand Seiko’s most recognizable hallmarks, giving the case crisp reflections and a premium presence.

The SBGW325 is fitted with a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface for improved visibility. Around the back, a see-through case back is secured by six screws and displays both the limited-edition marking and an individual serial number.

Inside the watch is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9S64, a manual-winding mechanical movement with 24 jewels. It offers an impressive power reserve of approximately 72 hours, meaning it can run for about three days when fully wound. Grand Seiko rates the movement at +5 to -3 seconds per day under testing conditions, while normal daily use is listed at +10 to -1 seconds per day.

Water resistance is limited to splash resistance, so the SBGW325 is best treated as a dress watch rather than a sports or daily water-ready timepiece.

With its limited 600-piece production run, hand-dyed indigo strap, compact steel case, and historically inspired Arabic numeral dial, the Grand Seiko SBGW325 is positioned as a thoughtful collector’s watch. It combines mechanical tradition, Japanese artistry, and understated luxury in a way that should appeal strongly to Grand Seiko enthusiasts and fans of elegant manual-wind watches.
