Google’s Sparkly Disco-Ball Icons Have Everyone Asking: Do We Really Want This?

Google Turns Pixel Home Screens Into a Disco Ball After Spotify Icon Backlash

Google has joined the internet’s latest app icon joke, and Pixel users can now give their Android home screens a full disco-ball makeover.

The playful move comes shortly after Spotify introduced a temporary disco ball-style app icon to celebrate its 20th anniversary. That design quickly sparked mixed reactions online. Some users called it ugly, while others embraced its glittery, retro charm. Now Google is leaning into the fun with its own sparkly icon pack for Pixel phones.

Sameer Samat, Google’s Android ecosystem head, announced the new look on X with a teasing message: “Your wish is our command. Disco icons available on Pixel as of today… Are y’all sure you still want this?”

Alongside the post, he shared a screenshot of a Pixel phone covered in shimmering, disco-inspired app icons. The result is intentionally over-the-top: shiny, chaotic, and oddly entertaining. Depending on your taste, it may be either a design disaster or the most fun your home screen has looked in years.

The new disco icons are available through Pixel’s custom icons feature, which lets users personalize their app icons with different AI-generated styles. Before this feature arrived, Pixel customization was more limited, mainly allowing users to adjust app icon colors so they matched the wallpaper and overall theme.

Google introduced the custom icons tool as part of a recent Pixel feature update. The available styles already included several creative options, such as a hand-drawn “Scribbles” look, a gold-themed “Treasure” design, and a colorful painted style called “Easel.” The new disco ball theme adds a much flashier option for users who want their Android home screen to feel more playful.

The whole thing started earlier in the week when Samat jokingly asked whether Google should make a disco icon pack for Android. He shared an example of the Chrome icon redesigned as a disco ball, and the internet did what it does best: reacted loudly. Instead of leaving it as a joke, Google actually released the theme.

The timing is part of what makes the rollout so funny. Spotify’s temporary anniversary icon had already become a hot topic, with many users complaining that the glittery redesign was too much. Spotify responded by reminding everyone that the change was only temporary and admitted that “glitter is not for everyone.”

Google, however, appears to be taking the opposite approach. Rather than backing away from the glitter, it has doubled down by giving Pixel owners the ability to turn an entire home screen into a mini dance floor.

While the disco icon pack is clearly silly, it also fits into a larger trend in digital design and online culture. Many younger users are embracing more whimsical, expressive, and nostalgic aesthetics, especially as a contrast to clean, minimal, and often predictable tech design. A glittering home screen may not be practical or elegant, but it is memorable.

Reactions online have been just as mixed as expected. Some users joked that the Pixel home screen now looks like it belongs in a nightclub. Others admitted the design was terrible but still wanted to try it. That may be exactly the point: the disco icons are not trying to be subtle. They are designed to be fun, ridiculous, and shareable.

For Pixel owners, the new theme is another reason to explore Android’s growing customization options. Google has been steadily expanding personalization features on Pixel devices, and AI-generated icon styles give users more ways to make their phones feel unique. Whether you prefer a polished look or a sparkly disco-ball interface, the choice is becoming more flexible.

The disco icon pack may not be for everyone, but it shows Google is willing to have a little fun with Android customization. In a world of carefully polished app icons and predictable home screens, a bit of glitter might be exactly what some users want.
