Google is making your movie and TV reviews visible under a new profile page

Google is updating its approach to how user-generated content, specifically reviews for movies, TV shows, books, albums, and games, is displayed and managed online. Starting June 24, individuals will see their reviews consolidated under a singular profile page. This new structure offers users a collective space to view and administer their reviews, enhancing the overall utility and accessibility of such content. What’s quite significant is that these individual profiles will become searchable via Google, presenting the opportunity for people’s preferences to be more publicly accessible.

The initiative began in 2017 when Google enabled users in India to share reviews of movies. Over time, the feature has been made available on a global scale. In the past, Google had made review profiles visible and searchable in select regions, including the U.S. and India, but this development now takes the functionality worldwide.

What stands out in this update is that anyone can click on a user’s profile and peruse all the reviews they’ve posted. To address potential privacy concerns, Google has implemented a feature allowing users to set their profile to private. This privacy toggle was only recently incorporated, and up until its addition, users might have been unknowingly showcasing their reviews to anyone performing a search.

Google has set profiles to be public by default, which poses a risk to those unaware of the profile page attached to their reviews or who missed the relevant notifications from Google (which could have been directed to less-visited email folders). Without knowledge of their public profile, individuals could remain oblivious to their reviews’ public accessibility.

Notifications regarding the ability to conceal your profile have been distributed through the Google Profile interface and a pop-up notification has appeared on existing reviews. Nonetheless, if one is unaware of the existence of the new profile page, these notifications may be insufficient, suggesting a need for more effective communication from Google.

The searchability of users’ review profiles raises concerns about privacy and potential implications for employment or targeted advertising. Scrutinizing a person’s opinions on entertainment can lead to profiling for job suitability or marketing purposes. Hence, individuals should be mindful of the potential uses and misuses of their publicly available opinions.

For those concerned about privacy, the following steps can help conceal your review profile:

1. Visit profile.google.com.
2. Next to your profile name, click or tap on the three-dot menu.
3. Choose “Profile Options.”
4. Activate the Profile Privacy toggle.

It’s essential to note that hiding your profile won’t erase individual reviews visible under specific movies or TV show titles; however, these reviews will no longer be associated with your consolidated review page. This update does not affect reviews on Google Maps, which remain separate from this new profile functionality.

Handling your digital footprint thoughtfully has become vital in an increasingly connected world where personal content can affect various aspects of life. Maintain control over how your opinions are shared by managing privacy settings and staying informed about changes to platform features.
